the past couple of days have looked like this - cloudy - but a few breaks of blue and some sun shining through the clouds.
because we knew that friday and saturday were going to be nice, we moved out the first 12 tomatoe plants. for the past 8yrs we used to grow our tomatoes in tires and it worked wonderfully! but last year we grew a few extra tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets and they did super well! so jambaloney dug up all of the tires and we put 3 5 gallon buckets in each. each bucket has a tall stake in it and the tomatoes are already staked for more stability.
why did we put the buckets in the tires you might ask? well first off, the tires will provide more stability to the buckets and we already had these cages built from years ago that perfectly fit around the tires. the reason for the cages is to wrap the tomatoes in plastic to keep some of the wind down and provide protection.
and then the next day - oh the sky broke open and it was clear and beautiful and blue and green for as far as the eye can see!
here's out back before jambaloney was finally able to get out with the whipper-snipper. and Frankie- Blue Eyes (aka Spunkly-Montooch aka Sparkle Salad).
and here it is all nice and trimmed.
but speaking of Spunkly-Montooch - a new little stray cat has started appearing around here. Spunkly has not taken a very good liking to him. we have been feeding the little guy - we've named him Edgar - he is so pretty a darker colour than Spunkly but with the same blue eyes. i will try to get a pic of him. anyway, Spunkly has been running him off but he still sneaks back and when we see him we bring him food. his coat, which should be long-haired is sooo matted and he is missing chunks of fur. and he's so tiny it could break your heart. but he's an unfixed male and that threatens Spunkly. our other 2 cats don't seem to mind Edgar but they brought Spunkly home when he wasn't fixed. so jambaloney has to go to work tomorrow and i am calling the vet to get poor little Edgar fixed, groomed (which will probably cost a fortune - his fur is a mess of clumps and he will have to be shaved). then we bring him home and see if he can't get along with Spunkly and the others. cross your fingers for all of us but especially for poor little Edgar.
can't do a sunny day post without some sushi. california rolls with lobster up top and then flash-frozen tuna (from The tuna guy) and flash-frozen, fresh-caught trout - woohooo! delicious!
ignore the weeds and only see the beauty of the peas coming up!
in other news, we managed to move the greenhouse in the house out into the actual greenhouse. i transplanted my parcel, brussel sprouts, parsnip parsley, thinned and replanted some daikon radishes and did a whole pile of mulch. lots of fun jobs. here's some beautiful white daffodils out front of the apple trees.
and a lovely dinner of homemade wontons - deelish!
beautiful rose-buds on the apple trees (please don't let the red and gold finches eat them all again this year!).
a beautiful sunset as the sun started to go down on a beautiful, sunny day.
and two large, fresh-caught trout grilled on the bbq with butter and fresh dill cooked into them - deeelish!
and a lovely evening to end a lovely couple of days.
it's cloudy, foggy, rainy, misty and gray again today. should stay like that for another few days. then we'll get some sun soon. please soon. jambaloney is working on his contract - he's in to work on-site tomorrow and we will see about getting Edgar a vet appointment this week. i am off to make pickles. i'll check in on your blogs in a bit!
Pretty sky!
ReplyDeleteGorges - the skies here are soooo beautiful - we love them! thanks for noticing! xoxox
DeleteBless his little heart! (I had a rabbit named Edgar, once upon a time) I hope he can fit in with your pack - or whatever you call a group of kitties. With nine dogs (all strays we've taken in), I know how delicate that balance can be.
ReplyDeleteoh Kelly - thanks for understanding that the balance has to be just right for all of the animals. we took in a stray several years ago - his name was patches - but he went after one of our cats and our other cat went to save his brother and it was ugly and we knew we had to give patches away. patches found a good home, tho. i pray after edgargets fixed that spunkly-montooch will learn to love him. thank you kelly. xoxox
DeleteSoon you may rival the Small-Hold in stray cat residents. No new females for us this year so far but two new males now have taken up residence in the barn.
ReplyDeletebuddy, we are certainly getting close to the Small-Hold capacity. and strangely enough we have had only one female dropped on us...jam took her to the basement and we fed her and gave her a blanket but she was gone the next day and we have never seen her again. breaks my heart. thank you for being kind enough to take care of all of your strays. i love you buddy! xoxox
DeleteEdgar...from the Edgar Winter group? I drool at your sushi...it is something I have got to learn to make.
ReplyDeleteFiona - i would like to say that we named him after something so cool...but we had been calling him little man when feeding and cuddling him, then that night we were in the hottub and i asked jambaloney what we should call him. jambaloney said edgar. i think edgar is a pretty good name for our little man. wait until i get a picture of him. he's sooo gorgeous! xoxoxox
DeleteSweet Kymber,
ReplyDeleteYour post reminds me of that song, "Here comes the sun". I love it when the sun shows it's face, and it's nice outside.
Welcome another cat to your family!!! Poor Edgar.....he doesn't know what's going to happen.
Your sushi looks amazing as usual.....I'm hungry.....where's mine???
Sending hugs and love to you both.
Sandy
Sweet Sandy - you and me both love when the sun comes out! yes - poor edgar...i have already spoken to our animal hospital and they will do everything to help him once we get him in an enclosed area. Sweet Sandy - don't be silly - you know there is always sushi for you. you guys need to buy whatever RV you choose and get yer butts up here! we're sending love back to all of you, too! xoxoxo
DeleteDoesn't the sun make you feel happy inside and out? We had about 15 minutes of sun this weekend and it felt marvelous! I'll keep little Edgar in my thoughts. Bless your heart(s).
ReplyDeleteSusan - the sun does something to me that i can't describe. it makes me feel powerful - like i could pick up a truck. it also makes me just want to lie down. it makes me want to plant every seed i own. it also makes me want to just wander around the yard and look at different things. it makes me crave the river and the ocean both of which are still so cold i would die of hypothermia in minutes. it makes me feel close to God. but, then, so does the moon. thank you for keeping edgar in your thoughts. it means the world to us...and to edgar. sending love. xoxoxox
