chia fresca....and our favourite pasta dish

how about some chia fresca?

chia seeds when soaked in water or any other kind of organic fruit juice turn pulpy. and gelatinous. not sounding so pleasant so far but ...

mix it into a fruit juice - you can even add alcohol - and blammo! you got a nutrient dense way to start your morning. or afternoon. or evening. get on it kids!

we make ours in widemouth 250ml jars. we use one tablespoon of chia seeds and then fill the jar with our berkey-filtered rain water. shake the jar and put it on the counter. shake the jar every 10 minutes until it looks like a gelatinous glump and then put it in the fridge. use it up by about 5 days. then make a new one. you can add alcohol to it kids!!!!!

if you are interested you can do some very simple searches about the health benefits of chia seeds.

we had one of our very favourite meals for dinner - organic brown rice spaghetti with a sauce made with chopped up tomatoes, a ton of garlic, sea salt and fresh-cracked black pepper, spinach, our own overwintered oregano and when served, grated parmesan and parsley.

somehow being able to put your own beautiful oregano in your food makes you feel great.

sending love and hoping that spring is blessing you, too, wherever you are!

  1. Hi Kymber :) I do admit that chia glob looks a little icky lol...but I have read of the benefits of chia for years now. I think Mumms has the seeds for sprouting too. I have to take these things one step at a time! All I remember from chia is those chia heads from the 80's!

Your spaghetti looks great! I LOVE putting my own chives on my dishes, I love the entire process of going to harvest them, washing them, seeing how good they look then tasting them! My oregano didn't grow the last few years, not sure why but I suspect it was the seeds. I have a good organic seed now so I hope I'll have success this time!

    1. Rain - who even knew that those chia heads were edible??? geesh eh? you can sprout them if you don't want the gelatinous glump but i sometimes like the kick of pineapple juice in the morning and can just swallow the gelatinous stuff. sometimes i just take a spoonfull of the gelatinous glump and it goes down pretty easy. i am probably turning your stomach with the word gelatinous by now - bahahahah!

you and me are the same. i went and got the oregano, washed it, dried it, treated it like something special because it is something special. i do the same with our green onions, chives, mint, sorrel, whatever is coming up this time of year.

soon we'll be growing all kinds of things and you will grow alex his cucumbers - i love cucumbers too! do you make cucumber water? it is DEEVINE! xoxo

  2. About the Chia Fresca, I think it would need a lot of alcohol in it to get it down! Ha!

  5. I have a love/hate relationship with chia seeds - I love them for their nutritional content but that gelatinous stuff - erk. I need to get past it. Maybe the alcohol would help? :) Your food is, as always, amazing!

    1. Susan - as i said to Mike above - if you add alcohol you'll find yourself drinking 5-7-9 glasses of chia a day - bahahahahahah!
