water heater move - part 1

jambaloney here!

first thing's first - scifi - i promised you a fishing trip so this one is for you! you will probably have to give the trout to pioneer preppy and sandy, but hey, you get to go fishing, right?

nice morning for it.....

really nice morning for fishing !!!

we are going to where the trout are going to go pre-spawning, just around that bend...

here is fat healthy female..

and a male - note the colours - in a month they will be intensified 10 fold! i can't keep trout past sept 01 so this was one of the last days (aug 17th)

total catch - 3 YUM! stephen, your turn is next, i went a couple more times before the month was out!!

and we are back - gorgeous morning - we went to the river to swim!!!

hey stephen - you asked -  the water heater... here it is in a closet upstairs taking up a PILE of valuable floor space.. seriously - this needs to be moved so we can complete the reno of the 600 sq ft mansion!!!

it is going in the basement - first step, build a base - luckily i have the EXACT dimensions in a piece of scrap from someone's trash - 2 ' x 2 '...

i have a LOT of junk wood to fill in the gaps ..

all free  of course..

i only used the nails on the left - they are ALL 2nd hand nails so the base cost exactly 0.00 dollars ;-))

where to put the base/water heater... mom, this one is for you!! i STILL have w. shakespeare!!!

ever since i can remember, we always had this cutout from an old tea crate and i have always loved it - i can remember this back 40 years - it is alive and kicking on the left.. on the right, some copy of a scottish stag that would be a great towel/hat rack keeps the extension cord off the floor - yo use what you can eh??

i trust that these talismans will make part 2 go well ;-))

seriously, i have had that thing 40 years !!!

it has been a while since i installed the jackposts - the feet are concrete that are a little wide so i need to "shrink" them - you can see how.. the pipe on the left goes to the new outside front hose that i installed 2 months ago.. it is on the ground due to some ^*^)^*$*#$*%^$*&%(!! É...  er and yes, it is loose for now...

on the other side - same thing...

the base is going here and the hose has to pass underneath.. closer to the wall..

leveling is always important...

this is a plumbing AND electrical job - so all the components are laid out and ready to go - i will fill you in on the details during the installation post - getting ready is 1/2 the battle!!!

oh yeah - here is some "existing plumbing"..

your guess is as good as mine...

valves that...uh..?? ...stuff ... and things...

whatever - lets enjoy the sunset...

and a double rainbow over vandura!!!

yes a double!!!

cheers all more to come on moving a water heater!!! scifi - i hope you enjoyed the fishing!

  2. Alright Scifi and Stephen fork over the fish.

That plumbing looks like something cooked up by Chef Boyarde.

  3. valves and stuff... indeed. We are going to swap our water heater out soon, it's probably 25 years old and sucking up the electricity. Luckily I know what all of our vavles... and stuff are for.

  4. You guys rock on your photos.

Looks like the fellow who used all the duct tape really bought into the concept that it fixes all problems... permanently.

    1. thanks matt - we try to make the pictures worth the visit!

      *disclaimer*

the duct tape is my doing - it was the only way i could keep the insulation around the nest of crooked copper pipes the first year we were here and the basement was freezing and the pipes froze and the pump froze and, and, and... ;-)

  6. My water heater is in the basement where all water heaters should be. It has leaked before, but a concrete floor with a drain takes care of that. My house is 4000 sq ft, but still, a water heater upstairs near the kitchen would take up valuable floor space.

When I moved here, the water heater was on building blocks, a little strange. But, one day all the water from all over the house drained into the basement. *not the commode) I was so happy the electric water heater was elevated. That was the time I had my house replumbed. No one has taken out an old pipe since this house was built in 1902! It is bizarre looking down there! Plumbers ask me what is what. How should I know. I leave when they work on that stuff.

I paid $800 25 years ago, and the guy never left the basement. He only connected the two bathrooms and the kitchen parts that were in the basement. And, he did not move the water heater. So, your skill saves you lots of money. Good luck!

    1. hey linda!

sorry you got fleeced on the water heater install - diy saves a lot of money to be sure!

      cheers and thanks!

    2. Oh no! He did not fleece me at all. I just wanted the basement part of the plumbing done because a failure. I did not ask him to leave the basement. Actually, the kitchen and bathroom floor are directly overhead with nothing but an original wood floor between upstairs and basement. I could not have afforded for him to leave the basement.

I would be more likely to tackle electrical work. Plumbing is too hard for me. I have put in a 220 outlet in the wall, installed a lamp outside the door on the porch, and installed an element in the oven, among other electrical things. I cannot do any DIY now.

  7. Jambaloney,

Beautiful pictures of the fishing trip and MY fish, bahahahahaha!!!!

I know moving the water heater is a big job. I also know you'll do a great job moving it, and reinstalling it in the basement. You need to make sure to listen to the BOSS======Kymber :-)
put it exactly where she wants it.

What's with all the duct tape, did the previous own hit a red light sale on tape?

Serious, be careful moving this thing and don't work to hard. Looking forward to Part 2.

Sending hugs to the both of you,
    Your Friend,
    Sandy

  8. wow the fishing is great. Would you have been better taking down the house and do a community rebuild?? haha I've been through the water heater nightmare, but at work. Came in one day and hot water all over the floor. It was replaced after a few days, but there was code issues from before that had to be fixed. 2 heaters one vent, A no go item. As things got replaced more code issues. All came down to V.P. Commissary being cheap so he could get a big bonus.

don't temp me, i have come near tearing the place down more than once!!!!

i have some code violations with the current installation that i will be addressing in part 2 - know where you are coming from buddy!

      cheers to you and yours!

  9. hey, J. Glad to see you back on line. I hope your good lady is well.

I wish I was as handy at building and fixing as you are. I can muddle through things but I never enjoy doing it because I'm always afraid I'm going to make a mistake. Just not a fix it up type of guy.

Enjoy that beautiful place you live in. If I were there I'd just pitch a tent on the beach....

practice make perfect - i've had a lot of practice these past few years ;-)

we are enjoying it - september is awesome here - your teat awaits you...

      cheers friend!

  10. Sadly, I must have had the same plumber that did those pipes in your house. It sure makes life more difficult than it has to be to come in 25 years later and have to fix all those things.

  14. Great pictures, looks like that was a fun fishing trip! Moving your water heater seems like a very daunting task, but I am sure it will be well worth it once the task is finished. Plus, with all the money you will be saving by doing it yourself, you can enjoy more fun fishing trips.
