the provincial bird of Nova Scotia - what an amazing sight!

wow. can you believe that sky? those clouds? the only way to believe that they are real is to believe that lotta joy drew them on a great big giant canvas and then somehow came here and threw that canvas on some trees so that we could look at such pretty skies. lotta joy - wow, buddy, i thought you did an awesome job on jambaloney's portrait here but it appears that your talents are endless!!! and thank you for thinking of us and putting up such a giant canvas so that we can enjoy such beautiful skies!!! it's amazing how selfless some people are. but we sure do appreciate it!

have you ever had the chance to watch a father osprey teach his child how to fish? we did today at the river. what an amazing thing to watch. more amazing is the fact that ospreys are the official bird of our province.

we were honoured and gave thanks to the Lord for allowing us to witness such a site.

they weren't bothered by our presence at all...

i tried to get a pic of when they dove for fish but missed every time.

the little man was learning from his father and it was brilliant to watch. the little man dipped several times but he only caught one fish. no matter - his father kept teaching him.

we had merlins build a nest in our yard back in the city. they brought their babies to our big, giant 76-yr old oak tree every day. we could tell that 2 of the babies were female - they were puffier - and one of the babies was a male. that little male used to sprawl on a tree branch and suntan - no, i kid you not. the babies would wait for approximately 45 mins before they started screeching for food. their parents always returned and fed them dead birds that were caught in flight - a little ick.

but the fact that they chose our yard with us in it to leave their babies...you can only imagine how touched we were.

and now an osprey father brings his baby to our land - down at the river - where we are - and teaches his baby how to dive - ugh. i teared up the whole time. jambaloney was just simply touched and amazed.

how lucky are we?

  1. Sweet Kymber,

You are very lucky to have the Osprey raising their little ones there. Have you seen their nest around the river? They're prown to nesting close to the water because of their diet (fish).
It's so amazing be able to watch birds and wildlife teach their little ones to fish or hunt for food. Apparently their pretty content being around you and Jambaloney. I thinks thats great and exciting at the same time.
I love the pictures you posted. Sounds like the family will be there for some time because of the water and enviroment.

You are very....very lucky my friend!

    1. hey Sweet Sandy - no, we haven't found the nest and don't want to go looking for fear of disturbing them. you are right, tho, the nest is definitely very nearby. we believe that it is on the point of our land and exactly at the river. and yes, they did not seem to mind our big white blanket, cooler, and us moving around. we sat down to watch them and didn't move much for an hour while the dad was teaching - but we were definitely obvious for them to see but they didn't seem to mind at all. i hope that they stay. and raise more babies. we have so many baby birds in the yard this year - grackles, red finches, goldfinches, bluejays, hummingbirds - like tons. and they are always out there screeching for food. we love birds. and Sandy, being blessed with ospreys down at the river is just the icing on the cake. thank you hon! xoxoxox

  2. Gosh..I know what you mean, we have Osprey every where around here. They like to nest in the high towers. or atop bridges. Once I was looking out my front window and saw this huge bird land on a limb of a pine tree...the wind span was impressive..Senior said it was a Oprey

    1. JUGM - they really are HUUUUGE. the pics don't do them justice. they have such an incredible wing span and when they dip into the water for fish - it is such an amazing site! as i said to Sandy above...we don't want to go looking for their nest - it must be pretty close by where we do our tanning and swimming. we don't want to disturb them as we want them to stay. jambaloney says he is going to follow them around in the canoe as they will show him where the fish are - bahahahahah! xoxoxo

  3. Very cool. We pass an Osprey nest every day on our way to work. It's housed in the tower holding the power lines. Once on a walk early in the morning we witnessed the dad coming back with breakfast (presumed it was a fish) for his young.

  6. I used to live in northern NORTHERN California, and when we'd go inland to camp on the Klamath River, my very favorite thing was fly fishing and watching the osprey every morning.

They never fail to delight me. I'm glad you have your own private audience with them!!

(Welcome home, Jam--she was almost unbearable without you. LOL)

  9. I enlarged the canvas just for you, but you're the one who threw it into the air and appreciated it. The Osprey was not of my doing though.

I can't wait for the portrait to arrive. I hope that it doesn't disappoint you in person. I'm figuring it should arrive by next Wednesday or Thursday.
