he's the baker, i'm the decorator

my man is a serious baker! he makes the best almond cookies, oatmeal cookies and peanut butter cookies known to man! but his banana bread is to die for!!! normally we have it plain with just some butter, but yesterday we got a little fancy! i made some lemon cream cheese frosting for the banana bread - it was decadent and yummy!

i decorated the cake with lemon and lime wedges, cranberries, lemon balm leaves and a sprinkle of brown sugar - mmmmmmm!

i took an end piece to get more of the frosting - man it was good! i couldn't even finish my piece but jambaloney is always good for that!

  5. Kymber, we'd like to invite you and Jambaloney to join us as Authors in Alexandria. This invitation has been extended to you by email as well.

You might want to swap notes with one of our other Authors who has bugged out to a smaller town and a simpler life.

In addition to posting on anything you wish, as you desire, you may of course mirror posts you've already written from here or elsewhere to gain a different or additional audience or for any other reason that appeals to you.

If you think you might be interested, let me know and I'll forward our formal invitations for you to look over and return, if you decide to proceed.

Come contribute your perspectives and opinions to the ongoing conversations there or, even better, start some new - and different - ones of your own.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  6. I don't tell too many people this, but my husband is a far better cook than I. He finds it relaxing to cook and a contrast from his time as an electrical engineer, and I just find it tedious ! (Other than a few special desserts !) We should all have lots of skills and cooking is an important one for everyone.

  8. Jam is far too talented to be one man....are you sure you don't have a dozen of him hidden up there? Love the view out the kitchen window, much better than mine which involves the neighbor's house!

    1. Beth - i couldn't agree more with you if i tried! amazingly enough - and hard to believe, too - he really is just one man?!?!?!? (unless there are clones of him hiding in the bushes and they take turns during the day or something???)

i love the view out of our kitchen window too...sometimes we sit drinking our morning tea and lose 3 hours and not even know it?!?!?!?

he will blush when he reads your comment...ya, he is humble and modest too...i love him so much!

    2. Hey Kymber - It just occurred to me that I could track the parcel online. It read that it's arrived at Gabarus STN Main and is ready for pick-up. It arrived on the 18th - so that was Wednesday. Weird that you weren't contacted. You may have to check from your end about that.

Oh and I'm stealing (Dang Nabbit) too. Love it !

      Have a super week-end ! xoxo

    3. Helga - we don't have a mailbox at our house - we have a community mailbox. the mail isn't delivered everyday and we have to go to the community mailbox to get our mail. jambaloney checked it yesterday and sure enough - we have a parcel. anyway, we get a little card that says we have a parcel. our mail goes to Gabarus - somewhere we never go to - i hate that our mail goes there but we are unable to change it. so whenever we get something that is bigger than a letter - it goes to Gabarus - arghghghgh! anyway - jambaloney will head out to pick it up in a few days. we are still expecting another couple of parcels and wait until we have a few before going to get them. i will let you know when he goes. i am pretty excited to get it right now but it's an hour and a bit round trip.

oh and you are more than welcome to steal dang nabbit - bahahahah! lots of love to you always, my sweet friend! xoxoxo

  14. Looks delicious! Don't make much banana anything anymore because of the allergies. Doesn't pay to take antihistamines and then eat a food packed with histamine. But in the dead of winter, bananas do still occasionally come home from the grocery store.

Has the snail mail package arrived yet?

    1. thank you very much Mrs. S. - it really was delicious! i hear you about the histamines - not a prob that ihave but i have several friends who suffer. still no package on this end - and i am taking it that you haven't received yours??? dang nabbit!

    2. Mrs. S - read my comment above to Helga. we received a card for only one package and as i am sure that yours will be coming soon - plus my seed potatoes - we are waiting until we get those cards before heading to Gabarus. you didn't get your package i take it?

  15. Good on ya Jambe. Me mum never taught either of my sisters anything about baking, but she took the time to thoroughly instruct me. Go figure!

So it is up to me to turn out the pies and bread and rolls. I got started with sourdough years ago and I can encourage you to do that too. Just milled wheat fermented overnight with a sourdough starter makes whole wheat bread so far beyond the store bought stuff you'll never go back.

Put a good tortiere recipe on your cooking site.

    1. Winston - i am glad to hear that you are such a good cook! i make the bread, pies, rolls and do the majority of the cooking with jambaloney as my sous-chef. but he makes all of the treats - like cookies and fudge and cakes and stuff - he is an awesome treat baker! i plan on ordering some sourdough starter and kefir grains to get started on being able to make sourdough bread and kefir - yummy! and i hear you on store bought stuff - we hate store bought stuff and try our best to make everything from scratch.

as for the tortiere - oh man. now you got me dying for some! i need to get some ground pork. have you ever had C-pie? it is made with a layer of mashed potatoe, topped with rabbit and gravy, another layer of mashed potatoe, topped with venison and gravy, followed by more mashed potatoe topped with moose and gravy, and lastly another layer of mashed potatoe. IT IS TO DIE FOR!!!! i haven't had any in years. gotta send jambaloney out hunting!

    2. Very best source for that sourdough starter is www.carlsfriends.net this is a starter from the wagon trains west days and it is one of the very best. I use it frequently and it lives here with much joy.

Tell you what, Mail me that C-pie. I feel that way about a good tortiere as well...been years since...

Darn, now you got me drooling on the keyboard.

    3. Darn woman now you got me thinking again. You and Jambe are from Ottawaskie at some point. Know the fudge maker on Bank street, a bit north from the old Rideau Theatre? I met him and quit trying to master that art.

SOOOOOooooooOOOOOOO good. You are naughty today.
