Fishing - Opening Day!

jambaloney here!

when i was a kid - i would always wait eagerly for opening day of the fishing season. it would change depending on species and location... opening day on the Framboise river is April 15th - i was ready, here is my license - i ALWAYS have a fishing license - my dad used to say that they'll take your gear, boat and vehicle if you don't - that was in Quebec, mind you ;-)

here is the rest of the gear - rod, knapsack with lures etc, jacket, hip waders, water and a bucket for the catch:

off i go down the road to the river...

and when i look back, there is the manor...

it was a frosty morning, you can see the effect of frost on the rocks in the mud - water expands when it freezes and then contracts when it thaws leaving these spaces around the rocks that then "sink in" to the ground. it's pretty cool!

the river's edge - spectacular morning!!!!

the canoe has been waiting patiently for this day since last fall...

so in the water and off we go!!

as i paddle out and away, i look back at home - the manor is the white dot in the middle of the red circle..

there is some beautiful rugged shore - it is early in the year the shore isn't green yet..

in a bay around the corner, i found this clay deposit in two feet of water...

perfect for making an outdoor cob oven that kymber has always wanted, i'll be back!!

next i am off the the place where two small rivers empty into the Framboise..

it is a bright sunny day!!

up the river i go..

it is breathtakingly clean and crisp!

it's all about having a good selection of lures - this is my trout kit.. - small lures i fish on light spinning gear with 4 lb test line...

kymber's breakfast:

and mine!!

the morning was amazing and the fish delicious - there is nothing like fresh caught trout. i am proud to be able to go get food and feed my woman ;-))

cheers all!

  1. Gorgeous pictures.

When I was growing up we had a house on the lake and whilemimdidnt fish I used to love to get up early and head out on the boat. The water like glass, the air perfectly calm...heaven.

  2. These photos remind me of being up in Northern Minnesota. Breath taking. My dad emailed last night that he is at his place up north to open for the season, lake is open and 8 inches of snow on the ground. Late season storm. I wish I was with you. So relaxing. My dads place will be our B.O.L. 5 acres. Dreaming of the day.

  6. Jambe,

Thanks for that. Brought back memories when I was young and full of P & V. Maybe it was closer to Halifax, but those memories brought a big smile.

I, too, brought home lots of fish for mama, but most of them came out of the minus 40 walk in, got wrapped in newspaper, then into my luggage for the flight home to Ottawaski. LMHO

    1. i love casting so trout fit the bill here - my favorite part is picking a spot i think might be a likely score and then plunking a lure just so... fish are a bonus ;-))

trout here are plentiful enough, the country makes it even better!

      thanks for stopping by sir!

  11. Jambaloney, Isn't it funny that in all the world people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars or comparable currencies for large urban houses, either miles or hundreds of miles from a place so idyllic, which is so much part and parcel of the ambiance and character of "the manor". Here's to you both, seeing genuine value where it lies, and then buying it, to make it, and all that comes with it, your very own. Glad you both had a wonderful day.

That is really insightful and sweet of you!! Any moment that we get a little bogged down with some of the less-than-stellar infrastructure of the manor, we are tempted to look back at our former home, but then we remember exactly what you are saying above and there is no comparison!!

      thanks for coming by!!

wait until you see the pic of the sea-run trout i caught last night!!!

      YUM!!

      do you eat trout often??

    2. Sadly no. The government here charges extra for trout stamps. After spending $32 for a husband/wife fishing license, we just can't bear to cough up more money for only one more fish species. There is lake trout and Salmon on Lake Michigan, but the cost of hiring a charter boat is pretty high. The cost of owning a boat that won't be sunk by the waves on Lake Michigan is even higher.

The lake near where we live is actually a bit big for our canoe too. Often I fish from shore at parks. When we take out the canoe, we tend to stick to the little bays and inlets unless the wind is very calm. It is a very fast canoe, but it tends to cut through heavy waves rather than bobbing over them and swamps easily as a result.

When we catch fish it is usually bluegills, white bass, rock bass, bullheads, (sheephead & carp-only good for fertilizer) occasionally we catch large mouth bass, walleye, and northern pike.

Our favorite fishing lake is about a 45 minute drive from home. Last year we made only one trip.

    3. i am really sorry to hear that - there is an extra charge here for Atlantic Salmon as they have been over-fished for decades.. but the salmon are hard to catch when they are running the rivers as they don't really feed when running so the trout are a better option and plentiful.

walleye are great eating - i hope you get out more often this year!!

  14. I used to like to fish a lot, always salt water. In Florida we can fish pretty much year around. When I first started we didn't need a permit for salt water, now we do but I bought a lifetime license. I do like to eat fish (almost any seafood for that matter)

    1. i would love to be able to fish year round!! people ice fish here, but that's really just hovering over a frozen hole.

a lifetime license sounds like a great idea!! Stephen is supposed to take you fishing, so maybe you will catch a nice dinner then!

      cheers!
