He is best known for his RANTS, but many Canadians also enjoyed his series "Talking to Americans" because it was just so funny. Basically, he did interviews with a variety of ordinary Americans on the street and would ask their opinions on a variety of made-up subjects. One such example was when he asked many Americans "should Canada change their national 20-hour clock to a 24-hour clock"....he received much support from many ordinary Americans as well as from the Governor of Iowa.
Please, American friends, don't take offense to any of that...it was all done in good humour and let's just admit that the majority of Americans don't know a heck of a lot about Canada! And that is ok.
Anyway, his latest RANT really touches a nerve. It is about Veterans being treated in a manner that no Canadian wants.
Basically, in a nut shell, our Parliament has agreed to cut spending by closing 9 Veteran's Offices across Canada. This will mean that the Veterans in the areas affected will now have to go to a Service Canada office and wait in line to be served. This upsets Rick, myself and the majority of Canadians.
I hope that everyone will play the below video. And get as angry as Rick is because of this treatment of our Veterans. Read the comments below the video, too. The comments show incredible support by ordinary Canadians for our heroes.
Rick - thanks for saying what needs to be said. Hopefully with this RANT, we can stop the Veteran's Offices from closing.
We will NEVER forget!
(Due to the seriousness of the subject matter, I hope that you all noticed my use of proper punctuation and capitals)
It's ok, American's really are that stupid. Just look at the recent election.ReplyDelete
Matt - i was not trying to infer that American's are stupid...if you watch Rick's interview with Americans about our 20-hour clock, he was goading them on. they couldn't believe that we had a 20-hour clock - bahahahahah! it's quite funny but the majority of Americans that he interviewed were seriously concerned that Canada get a 24-hr clock. and that is funny....but also heart-warming that they would care so much.Delete
his interviews with Americans about Canada's National Igloo is even more funny! and heart-warming as the Americans he interviewed were very concerned that our National Igloo would melt and most of the people didn't want us to lose our National Igloo. again, funny....and heart-warming.
i can't say diddly about your recent election. i was floored.
thanks for stopping by and thanks for the beautiful and eloquent post about your Grandfather.
oh I took no offense at all.Delete
Only a slight majority voted for Obama, Matt; the rest of us are in sackcloth and ashes!ReplyDelete
As for your veterans, kymber, our bureaucrats are doing the exact same thing to ours. It's unforgiveable.
Gorges, sadly it's that "slight majority" that now represents us as a country.Delete
Mr. Smythe - it angers me to no end that both of our governments are treating true and proper Veterans this way. i am hoping that Rick's rant will get Canadians riled and stop the closing of these Vets offices. you are so correct when you say that it is unforgiveable!Delete
Jay Leno makes fun of Americans and Canadians through his silly questions on the street.ReplyDelete
If anyone is betting on whether the homeless problems with Vets will be solved, I am betting on "NO." Some vets will still be homeless by choice.
We have several VA offices in this state. I am not sure how it would work if we cut out even one of those. Vets would have to travel too far. As it was, the wait for an appt was very long. I wonder how far your vets will have to travel to get services.
teehee...i didn't know that Jay Leno did that too.Delete
PracticalP - that is the problem. the Vets who used to have access to Veteran's Offices, will now have to travel even farther to get help. as Mr. Smythe said, it's unforgiveable!
Have you ever been in a VA hospital. Those poor people have to sit in a wheelchair or drag oxygen for 6 or 7 hours while waiting on appointments. They may have more than one. That is in Alabama, and I hear it is that way at all VA hospital.Delete
I have been a child and adult going with my mother the the VA hospital in Memphis, TN. It is the same there. I was rarely allowed inside the VA hospital when I was a child because of conditions and there were four of us children. When I was an adult, I swam through the sea of wheelchairs and broken people to visit my mother in her hospital room. I was never the adult child who accompanied her to her admission to the hospital, so I don't know how that worked.
If those people in the HUGE lobby were not ill when they arrived, I am quite sure they were ill before they left or after they came home. I was 50 and in excellent health, yet I was exhausted after a day there with my friend, waiting interminably.
I worry about the whole system. I cannot imagine if some of the installations were closed! The drive and wait would be much longer, longer than an ill or weakened individual could physically handle.
So many people I have met from many countries, mine included, are brainless. They don't read, certainly nothing written contrary to their views, and don't strive to get a balance opinion. Instead, they believe what is told them without every checking its accuracy. Does it surprise me that the Governor of my state believed Canada has a 20 hour clock, not in the slightest.ReplyDelete
Ed - i think that people stay pretty concerned about what is going on in their country and don't know much about other countries...it is sad but it is what it is. i only put up the reference to your Governor because it was done tongue in cheek...and it was funny. and also heartwarming because the Americans interviewed were very concerned that Canadians didn't have a 24-hr clock.Delete
Sis - Rick Mercer gets right to the heart of the matter. He's been entertaining the masses for so long with the much needed topics of the day.ReplyDelete
I hope and pray that those very same Parliamentary pencil pushers who are sadly trying to close our veterans affairs offices, will take notice and re-think their offensive decision. They should cut their own salaries for shits sakes and that alone would be a huge cost saving measure !
They should be ashamed of themselves ! All of them !
Again, wonderful post Kymber. You really know how to get to the heart of the matter yourself. Good on you ! Maybe together we should start a protest march and you know how us British Columbian's are about that.
Love Always sis, forever and a day !
I forgot to say that I did notice how you used the proper punctuation and capitals. Did you notice this is the first time I've cursed on your blog ... due to the subject matter of course ! Bahahahahah !Delete
Thank you for your kind note to my Veteran Dad in your comment. Thank YOU as well for your service to your country.ReplyDelete
I love my Canadian friends and my Canadian family members, we are more alike than you know.
No offense! Many Americans don't know much about America!ReplyDelete
So sad that they are cutting back on veterans access. It's not right. I hope that changes soon!!! I am thankful that here the VA budget has been increased much to help our veterans.
canadians are mythical creatures living in a mythical land called canadaReplyDelete
it is rumored they look like united statsians; most whomm are zombies moving about if intelligent
what more do you want to know?
Kymber, I had to laugh at that video, not because I thought the content was funny but to see we aren't the only ones with problems. Thanks.ReplyDelete
gee it has been a few days... must of wiped out canada again.. back to the construction shack ans redo itReplyDelete
maybe do it with dancing pandas
I can't watch the video as we've been without the internet for days and now it's fixed it's so damn slow. It's doing my head in.ReplyDelete
I'm still getting over the use of Capitals! :D
I was only just now able to view the clip just now. Apps for an 80+ veteran? I don't even have the capability of that source. I am sure I could navigate it if I could see it well enough. I am sure we will coming to the same predicament in the US.ReplyDelete
I love the street painting/graffiti/mural behind Rick.
