the first day of summer!

today felt like the true first day of summer for us!

it was beautiful!

look at the beautiful, clear water in our creek:

it constantly runs. and we could dam it and make a larger creek - something we plan on doing. we could run this water through our berkey system and have fresh, delicious water all of the time. but right now, the rainbarrells and our well work just fine - but a thought for the future!

here's a beautiful salad and herbs harvested from our garden:

and here is what we did with it:

jam is bringing home lobster and crab weekly - those are freshly-caught crab legs!

we took a walk to the river and all of our pitcher plants are in bloom:

here is the actual flower:

our pitcher plants are called purple pitcher plants, and if you are interested you can learn more here.

jam is truly a nut-bar. because it was such a late spring the water hasn't had a chance to warm up yet. but it was such a beautiful day that he took a dip!

he said the water was absolutely freezing.

i believed him. i stood in it up to my shins and absolutely freezing is a very apt description!

here is some chirashi sushi salad using more of the fresh crab:

and the lupins are finally blooming - woohoo!

the man loves his weekly hamburgers:

his is on the left with cheese, all of the fixings and avocado. mine is on the right - i went way out decadent with avocado, shaved parmesan and lobster - truly wicked!

even more wicked? tonight's supper:

grilled trout (the big trout), cedar-planked trout (the small trout), grilled pineapple, fresh salad greens and herbs from our garden, baby radishes from the garden and home-made sauerkraut. it doesn't get any better than this!

    1. Dallas - you'd be amazed at some of the stuff we have access to being we are an island in the atlantic. we have a super port on the island so a lot of stuff from the mediterranean lands here first before anywhere else in north america. and lots of stuff from mexico lands here first (ships) before anywhere in north america! it's crazy but we get the best lemon, limes, avocado, pineapple, pomegranates, artichokes, etc. etc. than we ever got back in the city! jam will buy the pineapples when they are in season and we will gorge on them and then buy up a pile and freeze for use during the rest of the year - it's absolutely awesome! we'll have to kiss all of that stuff goodbye in the event of a collapse but we will definitely enjoy them until such time! still waiting for a pic! and sending much love! xoxox

  3. Sweet Kymber,

The pictures of your area look so pretty. I don't think the water will be warm enough to really take the plunge. At least the flies aren't out bothering you. Your meals looks amazing, especially the ones you've prepared from the vegetables and fruits harvested from your garden. Trout BABY!!!!! Wooohooo, now that's a meal for a king and queen :-)
Sending love and hugs to my two favorite people.....those darn naked Canadians, lol.........
    Your friend,
    Sandy
P.S. what do you think the temperature was of the water?

    1. hey Sweet Sandy - you know i wasn't getting in that freezing cold water! hopefully by end june it will have warmed up enough for me to get in - the days will be sunnier and the air temp warmer so that i am hot and sweaty and can handle the freezing water - teehee! and we love having fresh food from our garden, just like you guys! oh ya and trouts are the food of the gods! well except for lobster which i really love!

the water temp yesterday was about 12-15 C (warmer on the surface and that is about 55-60F. the warmer the water every gets is about 20C (70F) but that is only in the dog days of summer - the last 3 weeks of august and first 3 weeks of september. sending much love to you and yours my sweet friend! xoxox

    2. Sweet Kymber,

I remember when I was a kid (which wasn't too long ago....bahahahahaha) swimming in Lake Superior up in the Upper Peninsula when the temperature of the water was in the 30's and 40's. Yes, we were crazy back when we were kids. Oh and that was with a bathing suit......no nakedness there, lol....

  4. Does the water ever get above 33 degrees there? I somehow doubt it.
Since you have trout though that makes it worth it.

    1. 33 degrees? are you kidding me??? it never gets above 20C (70F) - you have to tough to swim in that river and the ocean is even colder!!! but ya - trout makes it worth it! sending love and prayers to you and for Mrs. PP! xoxo

    1. Dani - i think i picked up calling her Dallas from you! and yes - get us a pic DFW! you are too far away from Dani and i or you bet one of us would be knocking on your door with a camera - bahahahah!

that little stream never runs dry Dani. it is run off from our well and the well collects run-off rainwater and is always full. and yes - if we damned it we could definitely put it through the filter but to be honest - i want to have that creek water tested. it might be potable just as is. sending you much love! xoxoxo

  8. thanks Ed! no, i have no formal training but always watched cooking shows since i was a kid. and i must have 10 million cook books that i re-read all of the time. my besty here gave me her very expensive french cooking technique book and i have been devouring it for the past 4 years. i like to make a lot of different styles of food but always add/remove ingredients based on what i consider our flavour profile. but i also love traditional food as well.

i'll let you know the minute i get my beautiful pen! xox
