it's been another few beautiful summer days - woohoo! i love these summer days in june! they are so good for the garden and everything is coming up gangbusters!
jambaloney was at work for the full day yesterday - he is really enjoying this job even more than he thought he would. this job is keeping him on his toes to say the least!
we've been working in the gardens - as everyone knows it's a daily job! today jam has been weeding the garden beds and weed-whacking the majority of our yard. i have planted more brassicas (radicchio, cabbage and turnip) and some more spinach.
here's our daily salad from the salad bar and our own fresh herbs. this time i threw in an unripe hungarian hot wax pepper - these babies are hot no matter what their colour!
if you don't have much land or live in an apartment, growing a few pots of various lettuces and herbs can really go a long way in regards to your health.
here's a mixed bean salad with our own radish, tons of fresh dill, tons of garlic - you know the drill! some fresh radish leaves and some pickled onions.
jam planted more garlic and cleaned out vandura. it's amazing how much crap vandura can hold. we moved the next round of tomatoe plants (12) to harden them off and will plant them in their tires (yes PP - i said tires) with stakes and then wrapping them in plastic. we also re-arranged the greenhouse and with all of the volunteer tomatoes (over 20!) - i have no idea where we are going to put them!!!
jam brought our 6-horsepower 1972 johnson outboard motor in to be serviced and the guys cleaned it up really good and it doesn't need any new parts - woohoo! we like the service we get here on the island - no one ever seems to be trying to rip you off - rather - they go out of their way to fix your stuff and try to save you money - it's awesome! anyway - he'll be picking that up on saturday along with another truckload of composted manure and then we'll be heading out on our guerrilla gardening trip on sunday - it's going to be so much fun!
here's a great supper of surf and turf - steak, lobster tail (we also nibbled on some legs - not pictured), fresh pineapple, grapes, more radish leaves and some sauteed in butter mushrooms - yummeh!
jam is getting ready to do his contract work, it's a beautiful evening and there will be many walks and hottub dips. then a netflix movie and early to bed!
tomorrow we'll plant out the next 12 tomatoes, planting a new round of beets and radish and some more brassicas. i love this time of year (except for the blackflies. dang rotten little ugly buggers!)
Blackflies "dang rotten little ugly buggers" and Black tires.... Hmmmm do we see the similarities? :)
ReplyDeleteMmMMMM steak and lobster.
listen you - yer just jealous of our awesome tires!!! and if you ever came up - i'd feed you steak and lobster till you burst! sending healing thoughts for Mrs. PP. and love. xox
DeleteSweet Kymber,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful days like these are spent outside planting, weeding, and just piddling around the homestead. I know you're excited about planting your guerrilla garden, this should be fun....and a nice trip out on one of those beautiful islands. Hopefully, those darn black flies will leave y'all alone. Enjoy your delicious looking steaks, and lobster.............while we suck down cold RAW food, lol......
Actually, we were enjoying a nice cold dinner earlier today. Cut up veggies, fruit, and cheese. I'm glad to hear Jam is enjoying this new contract. Life is good!!!!
Sending hugs and love to you both.
Your friend,
Sandy
hey Sweet Sandy - that's exactly what these kinds of days are for! and just wait for the guerrilla gardening experiment - i am sure that this will work - woohoo! oh and the black flies will be worse at the islands - arghghghgh! and i love having raw food and cheese plates for supper - especially when it is really hot out - they are deelish! jam is really enjoying his work and sends big hugs to you! as do i! and much love to all of you! xoxox
DeleteSo many of the women that blog make these wonderful meals for their husbands. Do you have a sister? I will divorce my wife and marry your sister if she can cook like you.
ReplyDeleteIt's been so hot here that just surviving during the day is an accomplishment. I should have gotten a lot more work done than I have, but they say maybe the heat wave will start to break up this weekend. Something about a high pressure system trapping the heat here in the South but now it's shifting.
I'm glad everything is going well up there. If you two ever have any problems you never talk about them. Life is good at your retreat.
Harry, but what about that neighbor who give you garden produce and ammo???? ;)
DeleteHarry - i just can't believe the heat and humidity you guys are experiencing - i don't know how you can handle it!!! please make sure to stay hydrated and don't overdo any work - on really hot days here, i make jam stop every 20 minutes and take at least a 20 minute break. he has been weed-whacking the past few days in his bug suit (and they are horribly hot), so i will not let him do the whole yard at once. please promise to stay hydrated.
Deleteand oh heck - we have tons of problems! have you read our blog??? bahahahah! if it's not one thing, it's another. but we try to accept each thing as a challenge - it's challenging to live here but we love it! except for those darn blackflies - arghghgh! and now the deerflies and mosquitoes are out!
Harry - you must have a pile of biting bugs in your forests, no?
sending much love to you and yours and especially to the sick, little ferrets. give them a kiss for me. xoxo
Maybe plant some guerrilla tomatoes too!
ReplyDeleteltw - get out of my brain! you know for certain i am guerrilla planting some of those tomatoes!!!! xoxox
DeleteLove the daily salad! And I have to say your photos give me visions of slightly cooler temperatures than the blistering ones we've had this month.
ReplyDeleteLeigh - the daily salad rocks! and yes, we have a very temperate climate - cool spring, cool summer, cool fall and cool (sometimes cold) winter. but all very temperate. i can't even imagine some of the temperatures that you southerners live through - i swear i'd die! xox
DeleteIt looks very green and lush there and of course the food looks great. Our garden is finally growing after a month of rain, the tomatoes doubled in size within a week. We haven't planted anything at the cabin yet but that is tomorrows plan. Just to see how things do... if we can survive the mosquitoes. I should wear a shirt but that's not any fun.
