it's really spring!!!

this was the sky yesterday morning - isn't it gorgeous? we had an awesome day yesterday - we started our pepper plants, planted onions, chives, carrots, kale and swiss chard! jambaloney is still filling beds and tires - poor guy - he must have shoveled 4 million wheelbarrows of dirt by now!!! we stopped work at noon to have some lunch and then went for a walk to the river. for the rest of the afternoon we read, napped and suntanned - it was a glorious day!

here's the onion and garlic bed - i left some bunching onions overwinter and we'll be eating those babies soon! i planted a bunch of garlic at the bottom of the bed and 7 more rows of onions - yummeh!

here's the carrot bed - 5 different kinds of carrots and 3 rows of each. we can't wait to start digging them out and eating them - we won't even bother to rinse the dirt off - bahahahah!

here is the sky at noonish...those clouds are so dreamy! and i wish the pics properly showed that the sky here is never just one shade of blue - it is always 3 or 4 shades of blue. Helga, hon, let's go for a walk!

another shot of the sky. i'm sorry if i am boring anyone but i can get lost looking at the sky here - it is so dreamy and beautiful!

let's go for a walk. ok. Helga, stop staring at the sky and come on! now we are going around the turn in the road - there's the river up ahead!

the river is so blue! and cold! that i know for sure - teehee! c'mon Helga, yer slowing us down with all of that stopping and staring - get a move on girl!

is this divine or what? i could look at this forever and never get tired!

it was a really hot and bright day. we put our feet in the water and immediately knew that we weren't going in any further - fuh-reeeezing cold! and we are not sissies! but we'll have to wait a few more weeks before swimming - i can't wait! Helga - stop poking those tadpoles!

inside our magic forest....so dreamy!

i love our trees! i love looking at the water from inside the trees - it feels like a magic, faery place! Helga - get down out of that tree before you hurt yourself!

this is where we plan to build a dock - it's perfect! and we will build our dock out of downed trees from our property and of course, with whatever junk jambaloney finds!

so beautiful!

we get filled with such a sense of peace whenever we are down at the river.

and now, heading back out of the woods and back up the road. Helga - get down from that tree - we're heading home now!

there's our little well....it does such a great job of providing us with water! look at the sun bouncing around it! Helga - get off the well!

i hope that you all enjoyed your walk with us...i know that Helga did!

spring is really here! soon everything will be bursting with green and we will be eating fresh produce from the garden. i love days like this.

  3. Wow, beautiful, just freakin' beautiful! What an amazing place you live. OK, having lived near some rivers and of course in Houston, we have "bayous", do you ever have to worry about flooding on your property?

    1. 1st Man - it really is beautiful - we love being here sooooo much! we are lucky to have such a gorgeous property and we always give thanks - pretty much everytime we are out in the yard! we couldn't be more grateful but we try! we soooo love it here! our property is way up high on a hill so we don't worry about flooding...although sometimes if the river backs up then it will sog out our suntanning area at the river...but only a few feet in. make sense?

  4. So pretty:) I love that you have your river...I wish we had one, but if we did I would never get any work out of my tribe - they would be too busy playing in the water all day! Your garden's are coming along so nicely:)

  6. You can see the tree's through the forest, nice job. Very nice pictures of really nice weather. Inspiring to take more pictures for my blog, I'm a slacker on that.

    Why didn't you swim?

    1. Max - swim???? swim??? are you serious???? we are talking water temps of about 9-10C (49ish F) - are you freakin crazy?!?!?!?! you are more than welcome to jump in buddy but i need that water to be at least 10 more degrees !!!

    2. You know I would totally get in. Might not be able to swim, but the lakes at 12k+ feet just have an irresistible pull to me. I always pack trunks and a towel, even when I know the water will be 50 or so degrees.

Yes, I am crazy, but to be normal would be so... mainstream.

    3. buddy - you are more than welcome to get into that water. we put our feet in and they immediately went numb and turned blue - it's fuh-reakin' freezin'!!! but i will hold a bathrobe and towel for you if you do get in!!! bahahahahah!

    1. Akannie - it is sooo beautiful and serene....we enjoy walking down to the river all year long but this time of year is the best! garlic is one of those forgiving kinds of plants...in my experience, you can pretty much plant it whenever. you can overwinter it as well. these garlic will be left to overwinter and we will pull them up in the spring. garlic is easy and awesome to grow - go get a bulb...pull all of the little cloves off and plant them. you'll love it!

  9. Kymber,

You both have been extremely busy getting your garden going. I so love swiss chard, it makes for a great side dish or a complete meal of it's own. You planted 5 kinds of carrots, I didn't know there were that many. Are they different colors too?
Now, I would have gone swimming in the cold river. Where I was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan we would swim in Lake Superior and that water would get down right cold. Your skies and clouds are amazing they remind me of Wyoming and Montana. Those views you have, I would never get tired of. Maybe when we retire we should move up your way. It's a thought. Hubby and I are looking at possibly buying land within the next couple of years. We should put Canada on the list to check out.
Love the pictures my friend, take care.

    1. hey Sandy - i love swiss chard too and love to it eat it just as it's own meal! the carrots that i planted are scarlet nantes (nice, bright orange and barrel-shaped), napoli (small and fat), chantenay red (deep orange), arrowhead (long and narrow) and rainbow (these are yellow, purple, orange and red...they are fun!)! we love swimming but the water is really too cold right now...we need the sun to warm it up a few degrees over the next few weeks. and definitely put Canada on your list - there is beautiful land all over Canada and most of it is pretty cheap! you just have to know which provinces to look at. let me know if you want me to send you some real estate links. i am glad that you liked the pictures - i love taking them - bahahahah!

  11. I never tire from looking at pictures of Nova Scotia. It is my personal belief that there are places on Earth in which the veil between Earth and Heaven is very thin, gateways to Heaven perhaps. Nova Scotia looks and feels like a gateway to Heaven to me.

    1. Jane - i couldn't agree with you more! there are places in the world that i have visited and they just "felt" like they had something extra or something - you just knew that you were in a magical place. that is how it feels here. and i love your idea of the veil...the veil here feels incredibly thin. it's almost like i can touch Heaven when i look up in the sky. thank you for understanding and explaining it so well. xox

    1. Mrs. S - jambaloney will run down to the mailbox today and check for the seeds. it's not too late to plant them - we have a late growing season but luckily it's a long one. i plant on planting your seeds in one of our hugelkulture beds - you'll love it!

  14. Beautiful pics! Your sky is dreamy! I love your raised beds too! How big did you guys build them? Poor Jambaloney has got to be hurting from carting all that dirt!

    ReplyDelete
  15. thanks so much Wendy - we love the dreamy skies too! our raised beds are about 4ft wide and some are 12ft long, and some are 16 ft long. we ordered 24 cubic yards of dirt delivered last year...jambaloney shoveled half of it then. we are now down to a very tiny dirt pile...and hoping we can make it stretch. so that poor man has shoveled almost 24 cubic yards of dirt - bahahahah! it's amazing tho...he loves doing it and never complains!
