one thing that we really like here at the Manor is eating good food! we love growing food, catching food, preparing food and eating food. eating food is probably our favourite tho - teehee.
with jambaloney able to go out regularly and catch us delicious food - well, that means we aren't only eating good food but free food as well! (nothing better than free, like jambaloney's last post repeated ad nauseum!) (oh - he's gonna kill me for that - bahahahah!)
here is that almost 2lb trout he caught the other day. because our river is shallow and not very wide, the trout are normally pretty smallish. they still taste fantastic, tho, and they are still free. but this one that he caught was a monster - have a look:
that is one healthy-looking fish! you can see in the pic below that with the head and innards removed, it is a very firmly-fleshed fish! so is the little one that he caught accidentally.
check out the colour of the flesh - simply amazing! that is because this fish has been feeding on ocean plankton and shrimp.
because we don't have a pan big enough to cook him, jambaloney filleted and then cut it into 4 pieces.
oh - hurry up and cook you delicious fish!
i wanted to surprise jambaloney with the side-dish that i was creating for this supper. i wanted to honour both him and the fish with something special. so i made some delicious wild rice, with sunflower seeds and cranberries. jambaloney made the lemon wedges and we also added some wild strawberry flowers, lemon balm and sage leaves. we knew that we could not eat all of this in one sitting!
here's jambaloney's plate (i always take a tail-piece as i love the tail - yummeh!). the pic doesn't do justice to just how thick that fillet was. and the wild rice was so filling! we really enjoyed our supper and then ate the rest of the fish and rice for breakfast the next morning.
there are Kings and Queens, both alive and dead, that don't eat the way that we do! we love good food. it's even better when it's free!
OH I am sooo hungry now. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteoh Rob, buddy - i feel for you. sorry man! teehee.
DeleteThe freshness of that fish looks so darn appetizing.
ReplyDeleteagirl - i love that he brings them home and we either eat them right then and there or put them on ice and eat them a few hours later. fresh fish is to die for! yummeh!
DeleteDelicious looking - am sure it tasted even more so. Have you ever tried smoking the trout?
ReplyDeleteDani - we are going to set up the smoker in a day or two...then we are going to try smoking them. i can't imagine why they wouldn't be delicious when smoked and that means we can send him out for a few 8hr fishing trips and smoke enough to have all throughout the winter. we also freeze them but both of us are partial to other smoked fish like salmon and eel. i keep imagining that these little trouts are going to make for some wonderful sushi - yummeh!
DeleteEd - there are lots of places in Canada and other countries where the fish is cooked with the head on...but me and jambaloney prefer the fish cooked headless. i do eat lobster eyes tho! and i also save the heads and guts for making fish broth....very tastey and full of nutrients and vitamins!
ReplyDeleteI've never been a big "fish" person (shhhh, don't tell Jambaloney cause I know that's a sacrilege to a great fisherman like himself) but I will have to say this looks delicious. It's probably just because I don't eat enough.
ReplyDeleteOoops, hit enter by mistake. I was going to say it's probably because I don't eat enough fish, but this makes me rethink that. Love that you jazzed up the wild rice with seeds and cranberries and herbs and wild strawberry flowers. That truly DOES look like a meal fit for a King and Queen.
DeleteSo does that make him King Jambaloney the Great?
1st Man, buddy - your secret is safe with me - teeheeheee! fresh fish really tastes ALOT different than fish that has been farmed and then shipped half-way around the world! these are proper wild fish - so they are the tastiest kind! fresh, wild fish is filled with omega 3-6-9 and a bunch of other vitamins and nutrients! i had to jazz up the rice to show jambaloney my appreciation for his efforts and to properly thank the fish.
Deletemy friend - he has been King Jambaloney the Great for 11yrs now...since the day i met him - teeheehee!

DeleteMy bride ALWAYS cooks fish with the head on. Neither of us eat the head, but no way she can be diverted. I keep telling her she needs to mail the heads home to her brother...6000 miles away across the Pacific.
ReplyDeleteWinston
Looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteMakes me want to delay vacuuming and go fishing instead. Maybe the bass are still hanging out by the library. Well maybe I can get an hour of fishing in at the park and then come back to do more housework. I do not like vacuuming and cleaning in the daytime anyhow. Perfectly clean floors are pretty much an impossible goal, so it is really frustrating to see how much the vacuum did not pick up or how much the scrub brush failed to get clean by the light of bright glaring sunshine. It is better to do it at night, get a good night's sleep, and wake the next day to do something else.
Mrs. S - you are soooo right about vacuuming and mopping in the sunshine. jambaloney says get out there and do some fishing. the cleaning can wait - bahahahah!
DeleteOh my, that does look delicious. Can't wait to hear about the smoked versions.
ReplyDeleteI can't agree more, that fresh fish is the best.
DFW - i'll let you know how the smoked trout turns out - i can't wait to try it!
DeleteDFW - i'll let you know how the smoked trout turn out - i am excited to try it - yummeh!
DeleteThat is an amazing looking trout and it even looks better cooked!!!
ReplyDeletePioneerP - it was absolutely deelish! both of us can usually eat quite a bit but that fish was just too big to eat in one sitting. we ate the rest cold the next day and it was still deelish!
DeleteYummy! That is some good eats you got cooked up there. kymber do you go fishing too? I love to go down to our pond and reel in a big old cat fish. I love those things fresh with potatoes out of the garden and Cole slaw.
ReplyDeleteMamma - you and me both know that's some good eats! i go fishing sometimes but not all of the time - he likes to have his quiet fishing time, too. i am glad that you go fishing, too - mmmm potatoes and cole slaw - yummeh!
DeleteWow, as always everything you cook looks superb ! Lovely stuff.
ReplyDeleteJane - it was really lovely...i hope he can get some more big ones like that!
DeleteMMM... fresh trout. Lucky you. Our trout around here taste like the algae ponds they are planted in.
ReplyDeleteoh Rose...i am sorry to hear that! and ya - we are pretty lucky when it comes to our fish!
DeleteWinston - sorry i missed this comment, buddy! if your bride wants the head kept on, then i think you are out of luck - bahahahah! and so is her brother - bahahahhaah!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the reason that the thought of eating fish makes me gag is because I've never eaten a true fish fresh from clean water.
ReplyDeletelotta joy - that could be the exact reason. our fish are some of the cleanest, wildest, freshest fish in the world. i am so sorry that you have not ever had one. they are so delicious and so filled with nutrients - ugh. now you are making me sad for all of the people who don't have access to fresh, clean, delicious fish.
DeleteKymber,
ReplyDeleteBack in the day, I loved visiting the Winnipeg Biological Station later in the year. They were into prairie pothole farming then where Rainbo trout were planted in those ponds with huge shrimp population.
At harvest, all the 3 lb and larger fish could not be sold because they were "too big." Guess who mailed his clothes home again. Yup, Loved that minus 40 walk in freezer.
Right on, we DID eat well during those times.
Halifax = lobster
Winnipeg = pothole trout
Nanaimo = oysters
Moscow, Idaho = Rocky Mountain oysters.
Sea food every turn!
Winston
bahahahahahaha! Winston - did you ever send luggage home with actual clothes in it??? oh you are killing me!!! what are rocky mountain oysters - are they similar to regular ocean oysters. and buddy - what about clams and mussels? please tell me that your luggage was once full of them, too!
Deletei love sea food. i also love "see" food - bahahahahahah!
I am sitting here trying not to fall off my chair while laughing my head off. Come on Jambe, YOU tell her what are Rocky Mountain Oysters for Pete's sake. Best seafood in the Rocky Mountains, LMHO.
DeleteI was barely in my twenties when Reddie took me for a Chioppino feed. Before they brought the grand huge bowls to table they brought grand huge full length bibs for us to wear and proceeded to tie them on us. Seeing that, I knew what was coming would not be to my liking. Being a microbiologist I utterly detest getting my hands in my food. This was a case of dive in bare handed, fish out what mollusc you could catch and stuff it in your face. By the time it was done we all wore as much as we ate.
Since then I have had trouble looking clams and mussels in the face. Did I mention I HATE getting my hands in my food?
Only occasionally did I NOT mail my clothes home. Yes there were a few perks working for the Gummit. Darn few!
Winston
Winston - my friend Rob from Rob's bunker just sent me an email to tell me what Rocky Mountain oysters are - i had no idea - so thanks Rob, buddy!
Deleteoh buddy - so sorry that you don't like clams and mussels - so sorry! i love them! and i find them very easy to eat!
bahahahahah! i am glad that you got to enjoy some of the perks of working for gummit! good for you, my friend!
WHAT????? You mean you've been keeping Jambe so close under wraps HE didn't know????? Or maybe just timid about telling.
DeleteBut thanks, Rob.
Winston
no buddy - jam told me after i told him about Rob's email....jam hadn't seen your comment at that time...so i told him and then he went in and read the comments and laughed his face off...he couldn't believe that i didn't know what they were....seeing as how everyone in my family, minus my dad and myself were born in alberta. duh!
DeleteI love about any kind of seafood. I used to be know for the seafood cookouts I would do. I was like Forest Gump explaining all the ways to cook shrimp.
ReplyDeletefried shrimp, boiled shrimp, steamed shrimp, shrimp on the barbie, shrimp salad, shrimp gumbo - oh the list goes on and on!!! i love seafood too buddy - i wish you were here. i could feed you some awesome shrimp, lobster, mussels, clams and seaweed!!!!
