a busy week and a half! and sexy seed porn - seed enviers - avert your eyes!

did you ever have one of those weeks where you were so busy that you can't even remember what kept you so busy? well that was last week for me...i know i was run off my feet but i just can't remember why!!!

this week, i can certainly remember why i was so busy. more on that later, here's a beautiful sunset:

it was such a beautiful sunset but we had to look at it through the window - it must have been -100degreesC out there! brrrr! but it looks like our cold season is slowly going away and that is always a good thing! but when it's this cold outside, you want comfort food. i had done a roast in the crockpot and made the corresponding veg to go with it - and didn't get a pic! but the next night, we had hot, roast beef sandwiches on bread with bean salad - nothing like comfort food eh?

the bean salad was left over from the day before, and the recipe is up on our recipe blog if anyone is interested.

we played chase the ace on friday and my besty c had the winning ticket - but on behalf of someone else. so, when she chose the card, guess who picked the ace and now has a hit out on her - bahahahahah! she chose the ace! the winner received over $1200 and our halls each received a little over $900 each - woohoo! so we will be starting "chase the ace" up again on the 14th of march. it is an excellent way to raise money for our halls.

some sad news - a member of our close community and family was just diagnosed with esophageal cancer and will need many treatments into our city, and down to halifax. his family is on a fixed income and the travel costs are going to be tremendous. so we are holding a benefit dance for him on april 5. our vfd is also holding one of our games of bingo for him and his family this sunday. our friend r has worked at the bar at every one of our dances since we have moved here 4 yrs ago. he always has a smile and everyone always gets a "good" drink from him at the bar. all of our friends have banned together and we are in constant communication about getting tickets and posters ready, getting the word out to everyone in our other communities, getting donations from businesses and we hope that this benefit dance will be a huge success!

AND - and here's a big AND - G & C will be coming up from the mainland for the dance - woohoo! we love g &c and we love seeing them. we can't wait for them to move here and we are hoping that we can successfully kidnap them, lock them in their own basement and keep them here, this time, forever.

last up, for all of you seed lovers, i am giving you a chance to close this page now. what is coming next is like a Spoiler Alert in movie reviews.

LEAVE NOW.

teehee. i haven't ordered many seeds this year because we have been practicing the fine art of seed saving for years. we have all of the usual suspects - pepper seeds, tomatoe seed, potatoe seeds, cucumber, zuchini, squash, cabbage, lettuce, beans, peas, and every herb known to man. so this set of seeds are what i call my "sexy seeds". have yourselves a gander:

ya, you might not think that sorrel is sexy but once i plant that - it will spread and spread. and it will grow anywhere so it doesn't even get a bed or a tire. you just have to admit that growing eucalyptus is pretty darn sexy. come on now. THAT's sexy!

off for now. we got a whole pile of stuff to do tomorrow and over the weekend for the benefit dance - plus we are having a night out with our besties c &b on friday night - woohoo. i need to go make some supper for the man who has been at LobstersRUs the past 2 days - then i'll hit up your blogs! laters gaters!

  1. Sweet Kymber,

While typing this post, I picture you running to do things at the same time. You've been pretty busy my friend. Congrats to your friend for winning the ace game.

Nothing better than spending time with great friends, dancing, and having a blast.

Bean salad yum, it really does look very refreshing. I haven't had a salad like this in ages.

No need to order seeds when you've been saving them. Unless of course you want to add to your seeds.

Sending love to the both of you.

    Sandy

  2. Kymber, I found a whole bunch of seed packets I bought back around 2000 but never planted. They have been in my barn, in the climate controlled part, all this time. Do you think they will still grow? I figured you'd know if anybody did. Sorry about your friend, that's always hard and cancer is just about the worst on a family. But at least they have lots of good friends and support from their community.

    1. Harry - there are so many conflicted ideas in regards to how long seeds can be stored. i am sure that you have heard of the hermetically-sealed jars they found on a dig somewhere in egypt and had grain stored in them. for fun, a few of the workers planted a couple of the seeds and they sprouted. some experts will say that certain seeds are only good for 3yrs, or 5yrs, some will say 6yrs...but most seed packs have an expiration date on them but that is only so that if you see that your seeds have expired, you'll chuck them out and buy new ones.

i'll send you an email with what i would recommend you do to test the viability of your seeds.

  3. eucalyptus has a reputation for being a fire hazard. Some say it is overblown, but you may not want to plant it too close to the house. I was not aware it grew that far north.

    1. holy moly Russell...i am planting eucalyptus cinerea (silver dollar plant) and they will be planted in pots at first from seed. they will take a bazillion years to grow into actual trees due to our northerly clime unless they are overwintered in a heated greenhouse. i am planting them more for their scent and for use in flower arrangements. but thanks for that interesting read. and i have never seen such huge eucalyptus trees, but they are of the species globulus.

  4. Sorry to hear about your friend Kymber. It's amazing how the community is pulling together to help him and his family though. Just so you know, I had to take a break from reading this post after the food photos and get something to eat. I should know better than to read one of your posts at lunch time! :-) xoxo
