happy after thanksgiving day post!

i hope that all of you who celebrated Thanksgiving this week/weekend had a fabulous celebration! we sure did but then we love Thanksgiving!

the day started off in a glorious manner - have a look:

Helga - for the love of gawd, pull your pants up - we got a turkey to cook! (bahahahahaha! that's an inside joke!)

want a tip for making especially tastey drippings for your gravy? line the bottom of your roaster with the usual suspects: onion, celery and carrot. ya, you all already knew that. the trick: fry your veggies in some olive oil and butter first. let your onions caramelize and brown and soften your carrots and celery. it really adds flavour to your gravy!

yum - stuffing! just waiting to go into the bird!

i know a few of you will gag over this but we love our giblet soup! we have it for breakfast while waiting for the bird! so good for you!

here's our little spread - nothing fancy. we are purists when it comes to Thanksgiving. turkey, stuffing, smashed potatoes, brussel sprouts and carrot/turnip mash. and of course - gray-vaaaay!

here's our little table - we decided to have our supper at the kitchen table versus the living room/dining table because it was such a beautiful evening.

yummy in your tummy. we have been eating the leftovers three times a day since - bahahahahahah!

we had a wonderful American Thanksgiving day together. we spent the day being thankful for all of the wonderful things in our lives. and there is much.

what a beautiful ending to a beautiful day!

  2. What exactly is in giblet soup? What is in the gravy?

We put chopped giblets (liver, heart, and gizzard) and chopped boiled eggs in brown gravy. That is the Southern way, at least. I will eat the gravy like soup.

Your table with a view looks lovely and delicious. Well, the setting and food looks delicious.

What appliance is sitting right behind the turkey?

    1. PracticalP - i start the giblet soup by cutting the neck into pieces and browning them in butter. then i chop up the heart, liver and kidneys into small pieces and when the neck pieces are almost done, i throw those in. once everything is browned i pour in some homemade broth, scrape up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan, let that simmer for a bit, then i add some thinly sliced celery and some apple cider vinegar. to serve, i take the neck pieces out and put them on a plate - jambaloney loves those! then i serve the soup with fresh parsley - we love it! you would probably like it if you like your giblet gravy and it sounds like you really like it - bahahahahah!

i make the gravy with the drippings from the turkey, homemade broth and cornstarch.

ya - we love the view that we have even though our window is 2 windows that the previous owner put together badly and installed incorrectly - we'll get to that window one of these days.

the appliance is our water cooler. we run our our well water through our berkey filters, store that in 5 gallon jugs and then use the water cooler for cold drinking water. our well water is fine but it is a little brownish due to the mineral content.

  3. Your spread looked really delicious. Our day was nice. My brother and the GFIL came. lots of food and wine. good times had by all.

I soaked out turkey for a good 24 hours in Apple Juice, then roasted it on those same veggies that you did..it was really good and everyone loved it.
I also did a small ham, had that soaking in honey and brown sugar for a good 24 hours as well..wow! there was hardly any left.

now today we are smoking 2 racks of pork ribs...rubbed those down with olive oil and a spicey dry rub..then topped that off with a bit of brown sugar.

    1. Carolyn Renee - my mom used to do turnip and carrot together - we love it here. also when the veggies are done and you are ready to mash them together, add a big blob of butter, a nice splash of cream, and a good dollop of maple syrup - it's delicious! or if you are looking for more simple - just mash them together with some butter. we eat it like that all the time.

let me know if you make it and what you think of it!

  5. Hey hon - Inside joke - oh bahahahahaha ! Still cracking up about it are ya !?!? Me too.

Your Thanksgiving dinner looks divine and you'd pay good money for seating for two with such a view. Your table is five star worthy - I love it ! Is that real bacon bits fried with the brussel sprouts - oh my gawd, my fav !

But you know, it's that incredible blue, blue sky which gets me. It's just so blue all the time. Talk about a mood elevator because it's never that way here especially in November. Be prepared for my visit to be very lengthy - a few years at least ! Bahahahaha !

I love you sis ! Always, forever and a day.

  7. We're on our third day of leftovers. Today I made a turkey and gravy sandwich for a change of pace. I suspect we still have one more day left of turkey and then we are done for awhile... at least until I smoke one which I do a couple times a year.
