the river is backed up again - let's go to the beach!

it happens every year. our river gets backed up because of the small opening to the ocean. how backed up, you ask? how about this backed up:

that's about 250ft of our road buried in river!!! there's jambaloney trekking through it to make sure that our yacht is ok. teehee - he's naked so i blocked out his bum!!!

since there was no going to the river, we went to the ocean. the ocean is 5 mins away. the beach is always deserted and we get to frolic just like at the river. the only prob is that we have to wear bathing suits...just in case someone shows up.

it's breath-taking isn't it?

here it is from the other side - and there's truckdura! we love that truck!

check out the beautiful sandpipers and the sun bouncing off of the waves:

here's a few seagulls and a cormorant fishing:

yep - that's where our river empties into the ocean. and it is definitely blocked.

why am i sitting on a rock wearing a beautiful, white dress that my sister Helga sent me?

why am i running up the beach, screeching for my towel after swimming in the ocean in a beautiful, white dress that my sister Helga sent me?

it's top secret and i am not allowed to tell!

jambaloney loves swimming in the ocean. the salt water makes you very buoyant and he's a sinker - bahahahah!

here's a look from the point at where the river empties into the ocean...the ocean waves bring up much debris and seaweed and then eventually it piles up and blocks the rivers path.

want to know a secret tip for making beef roast or beef anything filled with flavour. i am taking a real risk here, risking my security clearance, mine and my family's lives...but i'll do it for all of you.

anchovies. take them out of the can, don't rinse off the salt, chop them up fine, add them to your roast in the crockpot or the oven, they will disintegrate and for some crazy reason known only to the ancient Sumerians - really bring out the flavour in beef. think i'm crazy? read the ingredients in worcestershire sauce!

last but not least - oh yummy breakfast of the gods - the last of the trouts (because we are only allowed to have 5 on hand a day and we would never break the rules and freeze a ton. nope we wouldn't do that. but if we did, we certainly wouldn't put pics up on our blog of us eating trout after trout season - that would be stupid!). for your viewing pleasure, one last trout pic until next april.

trout, potatoe fritters (our own potatoes - they are so deelish!), yoghurt, cream cheese, garlic and dill sauce, the fermented beets and daikon radish that i made the other day - they are divine!!!! and some edible and beautiful borage flowers. yummeh for your tummeh!

hope you all have a great day!

  1. It is illegal to catch the limit and freeze some for the winter? That seems all wrong.

    Pretty pictures.

    1. PracticalP - it seems like the rules are really wrong but brook trout are a very sensitive species and one of the most, easily-fished out fish in North America. because they are so sensitive, they are a great indicator of pollution and lack of oxygen in the waters. if you are in an area where brook trout thrive, and you care about the environment, then everyone will try and follow "the rules". if you overfish, they simply won't come back. if you over-pollute, they will be the first fish to die off. for anyone who is aware of their environment and surroundings, the first thing that you always take care of is the brook trout. they are kind of like canaries in the coal mine. when canaries were used in the coalmines, they were respected, well-fed and well-taken care of. i know this because my island is made up of a ton of coal mines...as is mainland nova scotia. the canaries were well-respected by everyone because they were what alerted the coal miners to hazard. so, too, here, the brook trout. everyone here follows the rules to the extent of everyone here being able to have access to them. rules are written to be broken and no one here would ever take more than they need. not ever. so everyone here who bothers to catch the brook trout...only takes what each family needs. this has been going on for centuries...provincial fishing rules be damned. which is why our river is still filled with the brook trout - they are our canaries and we all take care of them in order to be certain of more for next year and in the future. their being here and continuing to spawn here, demonstrate the health of our river, and the health of our land. something that is very important to the people that live here.

if all of this doesn't make sense...just let me know. we are a people rich in the history of the Mi'kmaq, our aboriginal people, and many people here, be they of Scottish, Irish or English descent...still follow and adhere to the ways that our aboriginal people taught us. like my father always said "it doesn't matter what colour, religion or ethnicity you are. everyone is black in the coalmine"!

    2. We hav lots of coal mines here, too. I am familiar with the canary in the coal mine concept.

    3. yes - i looked it up and you do have coal mines down there as well. sadly, ours are all now closed - they closed the last coalmine in the early 1990's. however, because of all of the coal in my island...give it another million years and this island will be a big giant diamond. and that is very fitting eh?

  2. This is the most breathtakingly beautiful blog entry I have read yet on your site; and I have read almost all of them. You and Jambalony are blessed to live your lives in such a gorgeous setting. And even more than that, is that the two of you are so aware of this blessing and enjoy it to the depths of your souls.

    1. oh Gayle...what a beautiful comment to leave - thank you so much for taking the time to leave it - i am very touched! you must have a person inside of you who loves the ocean and that is why you reacted the way that you did. Gayle - we are sooo blessed to have been able to leave the city and come here and be surrounded with this beauty and health - we try to be humble and grateful at all times during the day - as well as awed. we are awed by this beautiful place. some days it is very hard to get anything done because we are awestruck. and in love.

Gayle - i have spent all of my adult life wishing to be able to buy this island and then bring the entire world here in order to save it. this island is magic and it is filled with health and beauty! i try to be filled with as much grace as i can be filled with in order to give proper thanks. i know that i stumble, but i am always trying to remember to stop and be filled with grace!

holy moly - PracticalP set me off above and you have just added to it. thank you for taking the time to comment. we really appreciate it. and we really appreciate that we are here - in such a beautiful and healthy place. we try to be graceful and humble Gayle...we try our very best.

  3. He's Naked!!!!! Bhahahahaha... I'm glad you blocked out his bum my dear friend. Do you know how many weird people would be following you if you didn't.
When the river floods like this and blocks your road are you blocked in until it recedes? If so, what happens when you have an emergency?
I love the beautiful pictures of the river and the ocean and of course of you both :-) Wow, that is a beautiful dress Helga sent you. All your pictures of morning breakfast fish (YUM) makes me so hungry for fish. No more fish pictures!!!! What did you say? LOL......Darn season over :-(
Enjoy the fish and the beautiful location where you live.

    1. bahahahaahahahah - oh bahahahahahahahah! my poor, dear Sweet Sandy - i knew that i had to block out his bum but i also knew that i HAD to put up the pic of him naked rescuing our yacht - because...well...he was NAKED when he rescued the yacht. i keep telling everyone that we are always naked and no one seems to believe us - bahahahahahah!

the river floods like this every year - it doesn't block us from anything as we are high up on a hill and the river is 1000ft away. when the river is backed up like this, it means we have a much easier time taking the yacht to the ocean - woohoo for us! tomorrow is supposed to be 23C (74F) so we will definitely be taking the boat down to the ocean for another beach day - again - woohoo for us!

i am so glad that you enjoy the pics - i love taking pics and i could easily add 100 pics a day to the blog - but i do restrain myself - bahahahahah!

oh Sandy - the dress is amazingly beautiful. i wore it to our last community dance and everyone made such a big deal out of it. they all knew that my sister Helga had sent it from BC - that is the other side of the country?!?!?!?!? we had some young girls in their 20's show up at our dance - they rented our friend's cottage for a bachelorette party and came to our dance. everyone loved having them there! they came up to me and told me that they loved my beautiful dress, i told them it was from my sister Helga in BC, they were awed and amazed - and they danced the whole night to the extreme happiness of everyone at the dance! it is nice when young girls show up at our events and put a smile on everyone's faces!

trout season is over, buddy - but striped bass can still be caught down the road at Fuller's Bridge! and those babies get up to 50lbs!!! their flesh is white, ocean fleshed-fish like halibut and haddock - due to their living in the ocean at times throughout the year! i need to send that man down to Fuller's Bridge to gets me a bass - oh yummeh!

Sweet Sandy - you would love the fishing here! jambaloney says he will take you out any time! he knows that you are a good fisherwoman and he would love to have your company!

Looks like a real good time on that beach. Did your pretty white dress get wet and show your nekidness?...Is that why you were running? My daughter lives close to the navy base. The young men on the base are running each morning rain or shine when she takes grandson to school. The young men wear tan nylon jogging shorts and a white t-shirt. When it's raining she said you can see everything on those fellows hsve! bad girl...bad girl....

  8. Beautiful! Love the deserted beach, my favorite kind of beach.

Were were in Puerto Rico once and the hotel where we stayed had a private nude beach. After my co-workers had left for home, we glady went. Had it to ourselves for several hours until a German family showed up with their 2 little ones. We didn't see them until they were setting up just a little bit down from us. They of course, all of them, stripped down and played in the sand and the ocean and didn't give us a 2nd glance. So, we stayed awhile longer and enjoyed ourselves as well. Funny how other cultures are so less uptight than us Americans.

    1. DFW - we never see anyone at the beach! if you can believe it, most of the people that live in our 2 communities never go to the beach?!?!?!?!?!? crazy! i am glad that you enjoyed your time at the nude beach...and yes - europeans really don't have the naked hang up that north americans seem to have. we wear or bring our swimsuits with us when we go to the beach, but seeing as how we never see anyone, i am not wearing mine when we go to the beach tomorrow. i'll just throw it on quick if we hear a vehicle or see someone walking up the beach. i hate wearing a wet bathing suit!!!

  9. Mama Bear is right, if we look really really close and blow up the image 500 % we do see a glimpse of JB...

Love any and all beach pics, I bet you get some really nice shells up there too. We have an isolated beach like that down here, and we find complete conch shells..awesome.

Are you guys suppose to get any bad weather from the Tropical Storm Leslie? It is suppse to brush by Novia Scotia

    1. bhahahahahahahahahahah! good on ya JUGM! we do get beautiful shells but our conch shells are tiny, not like the ginormous ones that you guys get down there. we also get beautiful snail shells, clam shells and mussell shells...but what i really love are our rocks...they are metamorphic rocks and pebbles and the ocean makes them so rounded and smooth. and yes, we will be getting hit by Leslie...we just got hit by the tail end of Isaac - it rained for a day and a half non-stop!

Do you have any idea how lucky you are to live in such a beautifully perfect place (flooding roads and all).

    1. Brigid - this island was originally settled by the French, then the English, then the Irish and Scots. in fact, we have the only Gaelic college in North America here. anyway, we have many songs and poems written by the original Irish and Scottish settlers and their songs and poems talk of how the Scots and Irish fell to their knees on the decks of the ships, crying with joy when they first saw the island as it reminded them of home!!! our island is referred to as the 2nd emerald isle (Irish) and the green island (Scots). although our community is named Framboise...we have a cairn just down the road from us that was built to honour the Scots Gaels who actually settled this area. it's all very interesting.

anyway, yes - yes - yes - we do know how fortunate we are to be in such a beautiful place. we give thanks daily to be able to be here. thank you so much!

    1. Anonymous - it's interesting that you would bother to leave such a comment on a blog that you obviously haven't bothered to read through. when given the chance, we save every life that we encounter including flies and other bugs, mice, etc. maybe you should re-read my above post and several others to see that we do not kill fish "in excess" and give thanks for every single one of them. jambaloney catches them and immediately gets them in the boat and kills them as quickly and as mercifully as he can. we treat our brook trout with great respect and honour them for providing us nourishment.

from here on in, i will simply delete any snitty comments you feel like leaving.

  15. I have to assume the portraits were lost in the mail. OH horrors upon horrors. I am so sorry.

As for your photos: I enlarged Jamie as much as possible, but the damn black spot enlarged also. *sniff*

There are a million people who could live as you do and spend all their time bitching and moaning. "I have to fish for my breakfast", "the river is backed up", "I'd rather be inside watching TV". Every piece of land can be loved, hated, or changed, and this one seems to have met its soul tenants.

Even in my younger, stronger, taut bodied youth, I remained clothed at all times. I saw clothing as protection against the elements and insects and things that go 'bump'.

Where others see weeds, you see an addition to the dinner plate.

God how I love you and Jamie for the happiness in your souls.

    1. lotta - just sent you an email - portraits weren't lost - thank goodness and all that is right in the world! they were put in the small compartment that all of the community has access to, but normally when a package is put there, they leave you a note in your mailbox - we never got the note but jambaloney had the idea to check and there they were - beeeee-yuuuuuuu-teeeeeee-fulllllll! thank you so much! more coming in the email!

teehee. sorry about the big black spot on jambaloney's bum!

lotta - you really understand that this piece of land has been waiting for us...and we have waited for it. thank you so much for saying that. we really love this land. it nurtures us physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritaully, visually and aurally...and we are very thankful.

thank you for such a touching comment...it means a lot to me.
