busy, meeting up with friends, VFD news and some home-made meat pie!

last week we had some really nice, spring-like days - all the snow was gone again and we were able to spend some time in the yard, in the basement, and of course - in the hottub! last evening we went to our friend C & B's house for supper - and for jambaloney to fix their son D's ipod (you may remember that jambaloney gave D (he's 17) a coupon for Christmas to buy the parts needed to fix his ipod, as well as fix it for him. well the first kit came in, jambaloney tried to fix it, and then realized that he needed a different kit. jambaloney and C (i love her to death!) went to the computer together to order the new kit. of course she had her credit card with her and from the noises coming from the room - a fight ensued as to who was going to pay for it. i bet my $20 on C and promptly lost. apparently jambaloney had to hit her 3 or 4 times in the solar plexus and then straddle her on the floor all while typing in his credit card information. she was some p*ssed let me tell you - so was i!!! i lost $20!!! i guess it just goes to show that jambaloney will stop at nothing to honour his promises and to be a gentleman! there was no way he was letting her pay! bahahahahahahahah!).

so anyway, i was sitting at the table talking to C &B, and B's brother D, and jambaloney and D (their son) were in the living room together for about an hour. fixing the ipod. or so we thought. when they came out i asked if the ipod was all fixed up. jambaloney said no - they had spent the hour playing "Grand Theft Auto"!!! jambaloney had taken D's ipod home to fix it here, now - bahahah!

then we all had supper. ginormous plates of spagetti with meatballs. and buns. C knows how much i love buns and she made super-special pretzel shaped buns for me. B put 14 heaping piles of spaghetti on my plate and people here expect you to finish your food! i, of course, knocked 13 and a half heaping piles off of my plate. and had 2 meatballs. i knew that the buns were going to do me in!

i brought C a bottle of kahlua and a litre of milk - she loves kahlua! we also made some delicious banana bread that we brought for dessert.

by that time it was 5 o'clock and we all sat around talking until we all had to leave for the Volunteer Fire Department meeting at 7pm. we all attended, i got my new fireboots (jambaloney's will be in next week), and jambaloney got his new fire-fighting gloves (the women's are on back order). we also all voted on whether or not we should buy a fire truck from a neighbouring community. it is old but has been kept in great condition. it is a 4 x 4 with a bucket and capacity to carry 500 gallons of water.

how much is it going to cost? 10 bucks. the neighbouring community has had the truck listed on various for sale sites for $2,000 for a long time. they know that we need a truck and so they decided to give it to us. this is excellent news as this now gives us time to fundraise and save for a really good truck. awesome, eh?

in other news, the snow is back. it was snowing all morning, we got about 4cms of snow and now we are having freezing rain. that's okay as next week is supposed to be beautiful temps again and the snow will be gone in a day or two. maybe we'll have a few more snows before the end of march but april is right around the corner and then it's seed-starting time - woohoo!

today we made some home-made meat pie and beans. no pics of the beans yet as they are still cooking in the slow-cooker, but i'll try to remember to take a pic of them before we scarf them all down. they should be ready in another few hours - and they make a great early evening snack! back to the meatpie - here's a pic of filling the pie:

here it is with the top put on:

and here it is right out of the oven - yummeh! we are going to go and eat it right now!

hope everyone is having a great supper tonight. on a cold, snowy, freezing rain day - i can't think of a better supper than this!

  2. That pie looks so very good that I think I will have to make a largish one tonight for dinner. I don't normally make the lovely little leaves you put on, but I will in honor of you both. There is a warming trend here, but still nothing beats a meat pie, with a small cucumber salad.

    1. i hope you make a big, delicious pie and enjoy the heck out of it. i haven't made it back to Daniel's blog in a few days but i will get back to it tonight (if i can't sleep) or tomorrow. thank you for honouring us with little leaves - i don't have a leaf cutter so i just use a little knife. a little dull knife that was supposed to be sharp. but it wasn't - it was dull! and guess who's job it is to keep the knives sharp - are you reading this jambaloney?!?!?!? bahahahahah! anyway, like i said, thanks for honouring us with the little leaves! i love cucumber salad! we didn't have anything on the side of the meatpie as we had eaten a handfull of sprouts before the pie was ready and we know were getting a big bowl of beans in an hour or so! let me know how your pie turns out, honey!

    2. My dear husband brought home a dinner so that I could rest this afternoon. I will definitely make the meat pie sometime very soon. I also love cucumber salad. I like to make it with a rice vinegar and a very small amount of oil. Thankyou for your kindness, your wonderful communication and your friendship.

    1. it was the best pie crust ever - jambaloney said it tasted and melted in your mouth like shortbread. the key ingredient - BUTTER! i just don't believe that you can make pie crust without a big honking pile of butter. teehee.

  6. yummy looking pie there. I pretended to make some kind of chicken casserole today, it was OK. I was too busy watching new chicks being hatched, planting tomatoes and trying on bee suits. Awesome news about your new, old firetruck...gotta start somewhere.

    1. oh Mamma - you had an awesome day for sure. and your chicken casserole sounds like our "throw-together-casseroles"- and they are always a big hit! still can't believe you are going full hog with the bees - and can't wait to hear about your adventures. our old/new firetruck is going to be awesome - i just know it! then there's the fact that it is only gonna cost $10 bucks - bahahahahaha!

  7. Pie looks delicious. Butter or shortening crusts are hard to beat, but I have to make crusts now using olive oil for hubby's heart health. They work, but it is difficult to get them nice and flakey.
It was in the 60's here today, very unseasonably warm.
Hubby has today off work, and gee - he sharpened all my kitchen knives!
We're firing up the grill tonight for the first time this year.

    1. Mrs. S - it wasn't the best looking pie i ever made but it sure was tastey. i use olive oil in a few of my biscuit recipes - and it is good for heart health! i am really jealous right now - not sure if it is because you have sharpened knives or because you are firing up the grill! enjoy my friend!

  10. PioneerP - do you want the pic to be set up the same way as in my sidebar (translation: me lounging across an ottoman, OR... would you prefer a pic of me in the boots, bunny ears, and holding a pie standing on the compost pile?). let me know. i like to please.

  11. kymber,
You had me drooling when you mentioned kahlua. I love it in milk but without the vodka. The look of a pie is not the most important part. Besides, I like the look of a less-than-perfect pie because it looks truly homemade.

For heart health, use butter from cows that are grass-fed or lard from cows that are grass-fed. Read up on it-omega 3 and grassfed and beef/chickens/lard/milk/butter. Any animal product that is eaten from an animal that feeds on grass as opposed to a feedlot or corn produces Omega 3.

I don't worry a bit about how many eggs I eat because my hens eat grass much of the day. If they cannot be let out, I just give them greens from the yard or the house for their green stuff for the day.

Don't eat lard that is hydrogenated! Bad stuff! No better than Crisco.

Sorry to put a blog post on your blog.

    1. PracticalP - C really loves her kahlua too, and only puts milk and ice in it. i like it every now and again as a treat! i like the look of less-than-perfect pies too.

when it comes to dairy and egg farms around here - most of the farms employ grass feeding methods. we know - we check into that kind of stuff. good job with your hens - it means that the eggs that you are eating are super good for you! i love fresh eggs - like fresh from the backdoor but will have to settle for fresh grass-fed eggs from about 20 miles away - better than the alternative right?

no worries about posting "blog posts" in the comments - i enjoy it and encourage it!
