party-finger-food-platter friday and happy canada day!

another beautiful day yesterday!

jam weed-whacked the whole back yard - pic coming soon! but i just loved the look of those clouds! sometimes they are right above our heads and sometimes they seem to hang over our friend C's old house - they are so beautiful! i started more seeds in the greenhouse - woohoo!

we had a finger-food platter for supper last night and had a bit of a party:

that's homemade sweet and HOT chicken legs with extra dipping sauce, yogurt, homemade salsa, homemade guacamole, chips, fresh pineapple and grapes - many, many napkins were hurt in the process of consuming this platter!

i am sick as a dog again with bug-bites! we thought we could transplant another 12 tomatoes into tires without deet or bugnets but it was a no-go! we had half of the job finished before we realized we were getting too many bites and had to stop and put our bug suits on - arghghggh - i get claustrophobic in those bug suits!

this weekend everyone in canada is celebrating canada day even though canada day isn't until july 1st. we hope that everyone has a safe and fun-filled weekend! jam went into the city early this morning to pick up our working-like-brand-new outboard motor (1972 6-horse-power johnson) and to pick up a truck load of compost and manure (we need it to continue filling/hilling our potatoe tires - we've run out of dirt!!!). he should be home any time now and then we are flomping on the couch together reading books, eating lots of food, having a nap and enjoying a down day! life is super good (except for the bug bites!!!!)

i hope everyone is having a great weekend too!

  3. I would have guessed that the mosquitoes would have been bad down here before they were up there, especially with all the rain we've been getting this spring. Fortunately, we can still go outside sans repellent and come back in with our hides intact... for now!

    1. Ed - we don't have many mosquitoes - it's the black flies that do us in. i just went out to give jambaloney a drink of water - i was only out for a few seconds and blammo - 10 more bites! arghghghggh! xox

  4. Another drool inducing post..have you considered a cookbook featuring your home made goodness! I have a lovely set of bites from some sort of creature....they never bite Ralph but I seem to be extra tasty! Do you swab your bites with witch hazel? Ralph told me his mother used it and it does help.

    1. thank you Fiona! have you seen our recipe blog (which i have sadly neglected for a while now!) - you can find it here:

i am sorry that you've been bitten too! i haven't tried witch hazel but i do put either our homemade comfrey salve or our homemade self-heal salve on the bites and that seems to help with the itching. and anytime i get too many bites and start feeling wonky i take half of a benadryl - but not too often. mostly, ya gotta just grin and bear it eh? sending love to you and Ralph! xoxo

  6. It's amazing that just a few weeks ago you had snow on the ground and now it's all green!
Down here we don't have many bug flying around yet but they're on the way I'm sure. Right now all the cockroaches are still in Washington DC.

    1. Mike - this was a very late start to spring! normally the snow is gone by mid-april and we have about a month of just brown stuff and then for the month of may everything starts turning green slowly. but again - with such a late spring it does seem to have gone from snow to green pretty quickly! i'm glad you're bug-free so far. yesterday jam got bit to death by deerflies - arghghghgh! i hate deearflies! they leave welts the size of quarters!!! but jam doesn't get sick from the bites the way i do! sending much love, buddy! xoxo

  7. That food looks delicious, as always. I'll bet J is worn out when he gets home and will be glad of a little quiet time. We aren't having much bug trouble here, but now that there has been rain the mosquitoes will start coming out.

    1. thanks Harry! whenever jam does a day in town or is gone for half a day, i make him relax and enjoy the afternoon evening, or i make him relax and enjoy the next full day. we had a nice, restful afternoon and evening yesterday and now today he is out shoveling all of the dirt out of the truck and into the potatoe tires. we don't get too many mosquitoes on our land as there is really no standing water nearby. but the blackflies and deerflies are deadly!!! arghghghgh! i hate those bugs! sending much love to you, Harry, as always! xoxox

  8. Sweet Kymber and Jam,

    Happy Canada Day!!!!

Good Company, and Good Food = Happiness!!! or shall I say, A Good Life :-)

Girlie, you need to wear those bug suits so you don't get sick, and can enjoy the beautiful day outside. I know they're claustrophobic but they protect you from those terrible bites.

Enjoy those beautiful skies up there!!!
Sending hugs and love to you both.
    Your Friend,
    Sandy

    1. thank you Sweet Sandy! and yes - you know the magic required to have a fabulous life! and i know i need to wear the bug suit but i just hate them! if i am planting outside for the whole day, i wear them, but if i am just doing odd jobs like watering or something, then i try to sneak out and not get bit. i just brought jam some water, i was only out for like 5 seconds and i got 10 more bites - arghghgh! i hate those blackflies! and yes, we will continue enjoying these beautiful skies. it's cloudy today and cool, but still beautiful out there. we're sending much love and hugs back to you, as always! xoxoxo

  9. Not sure I could deal with all those bugs! A bug suit in that heat doesn't sound like fun!

  10. Mosquitoes have been driving us nuts like your black flies. The heat makes them angry and they will bite you through any lightweight clothing you are wearing. My sympathies to you!

Enjoy your festivities! :-) Happy Canada Day to you & Jambaloney!
