pork shoulder....and cranberries!

jambaloney found these pork shoulders on sale last year and got us a bunch of them! even though they are cheaper cuts of meat, if basted properly and cooked very slowly - they come out tasting divine! i use a maple/mustard glaze and it is really good!

here's some love on a plate - the ham shoulder, our home-grown roasted potatoes, our own swiss chard and our friend D's apples!

we have been eating our friend D's apples every single day - we love those apples! of course, after you eat ham, hot ham sandwiches, cold ham sandwiches and snack on ham and apples all day for a few days....it's time to make home-made ham and beans - yummeh!

here's another meatpie that we made and ate in one day - we love our meatpie around here!

another favourite supper is veggie shis-kebabs on rice. i put some olive oil in a big bowl, add salt and pepper, cumin, turmeric, cayenne and fresh-squeezed garlic and then chop up all of the veg and let them marinate for hours in the oil, constantly stirring them. it's a delicious marinade and some of it dribbles onto jambaloney's perfect rice - yummeh!

oh ya - CRANBERRIES! we have been getting cranberries from a variety of places over the past few years - can you believe that we found some growing down at our own riverfront?!?!?!?!?

the above pic is me laying in the wet grass looking for cranberries. can you say SCORE? oh i think that you can!

look at these babies!

growing right on our land?!?!?!?! that means we now have raspberries, blackberries, blueberries AND cranberries growing right on our land!!! can you say anti-oxidants!!! oh we are thrilled!

the pic above is a ginormac, cleaned kitty-litter bucket and the cranberries are about three inches deep! we were only picking for about 25mins and got that many. we plan on going down tomorrow and picking all of the rest. we are just way too thrilled to find cranberries on our land - woohoo for us!

  4. Sweet Kymber,

You've succeeded in making me and probably the rest of your blogger friends hungry :-)

I'm happy to hear Jambaloney found a good deal on pork (ham) shoulders to put away a few in the freezer. I found a good deal last week on turkey's 72 cents a pound, and snatched up a few for the freezer.

Wild cranberries, oh how wonderful!!! You do have all kinds of wild berries up there, I miss living in Michigan up in the UP. We had all kinds of wild berries there too.

Today we are preparing for the temperatures to drop dramatically, with rain, sleet, ice, and snow. Thank God for being totally prepared. Having preps ready not just for the economic collapse but for storms makes a world of difference. This way you don't have to deal with the hoards of people rushing to prepare for the storm the last minute.
    Have a great weekend!!!

Sending love to the both of you.
    Your friends,
    Sandy and Bulldog Man

    1. Sweet Sandy - whenever jam sees a really good deal on anything - he'll buy 12! on average, we go to town twice a month and this year we are trying to stretch that to once every 3 weeks and better, once a month. we're not quite there yet but that is our goal. so on different trips we are usually buying very specific things. and that helps when we see a really good price on something - then we can stock up on that individual thing. i know you know what i mean!

oh Sandy - you know how delicious wild berries are - we have the wild raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and now cranberries!!! add to that our friend D's gorgeous apples and we are set!

i sure do hope that the storm isn't as bad as predicted! and yes, being prepared - it makes all the difference in being able to ride out a storm. i am glad that you are prepped!

much love always going yours, Tank's and Bulldog Man's way! xoxoxox

  5. Over the years out of frugality, I have regularly purchased cheap and unwanted cuts of meat and learned to use them. But it seems like cheap cuts always come back around and eventually turn into expensive cuts and I have to find something else. For example, I remember back in college how I could get five pound bags of chicken wings for about a buck. Now I probably can't get one wing for the same. One of my favorite parts of the animal now to get for a song are the tails and necks. I stew those up with veggies and serve over rice!

The US Thanksgiving is next week and cranberries are a traditional part of it. There is still time to get a box between there and here. Just saying!

    1. Ed buddy - me and jam were just having that same discussion a few days ago. he was saying he could remember when chicken thighs and wings were what poor people ate and they were cheap-cheap-cheap! nowadays chicken wings are expensive as oh-heck!!! good job with the tails and necks - i love all kinds of cheap meat cuts - must be the way that we were raised eh? jam is a big fan of necks - i love organ meat! thank goodness organ meat is still pretty cheap!

i'd love to send you some cranberries - i want your wife's lumpia recipe first!!!

  6. Yep! Can't go wrong price wise with pork shoulders, and those pork country style ribs.. My family loves it all. I use roughly that same glaze as well, it is tasty.
Every thing looks delish as always!
Yes cranberries are very good anti-oxidents as well as an aid for treating Urinary infections. lots of uses for them. So Enjoy....

  9. Nice a berry farm. Other than strawberries and blackberries I can't seem to get the other berries going around here especially blueberries. Maybe it is time to say...

All your berries R Belongs to ME!!!!

    1. PP - all of our berries are wild and just growing here by themselves - we have done nothing to take care of the blackberries, raspberries and cranberries!!! our friend D has the blueberry farm and he just rotates his fields, every 2-3 years he burns his fields and then they come back like gangbusters. honest to goodness, we don't really know a lot about taking care of berry patches but that's what this winter is for - reading and learning!

bahahahahahahah! it never gets old buddy!

Joey - i have to take a pic of a piece of meat pie cut - i make it the proper British way - not the skinny, little North American way!!! i stuff those pies with huge chunks of meat, huge chunks of potatoes, huge chunks of carrot and turnip and onion!!! my dad was from england and he hated the meat pies that people made here! oh and tons of gravy in the meatpie - never dry buddy!

  11. Cranberries??? How cool is THAT?? We have our dewberries, which grow crazy wild all over the property, so it's nice having that, but alas that's the only fruit growing wild. So that's why I planted fruit trees all over ha.

Your food does always look so yummy!!!

    Stay warm and full!

    1. 1st Man - you guys will soon have all kinds of fruit trees producing all kinds of fruit and that is our next step! we haven't started worrying about an orchard yet because we just keep finding berries all over the place - bahahahah! and with those berries and our friend D's apples, we are in pretty good shape. can't wait to start trying to grow peaches and pears in the greenhouse - cross your fingers for us!

  12. I wish I had a freezer full of those pork shoulders. They look mighty succulent. J was smart to load up when he could.

You do a heck of a good job with your presentation of your food. My daughter works in a hoity toity restaurant and she says with food, presentation is very important. You've got a natural flair for it.

    1. Harry - he has a real eye for sales and when he sees something at a really good price, he buys 12!!! or more!!! i really appreciate that about him!

thanks so much for the compliment. my mom used to always lay out food on our plates in such a pretty way. when i was single, i would always try to make my own food look nice, but since meeting jam, and him being such a hard worker at everything he does, i feel it's the least i can do to always try to prepare healthy, nice-looking meals for him. thanks Harry!

  13. I love my little rotisserie oven for all roasts along with chicken. I don't know why a rotisserie seems to cook even a tough piece of meat fairly quickly but it turns out so tender. Yes it's a small Ronco that I got at the local thrift store for $6.00 and I love just setting the timer and letting it go.
