the greenhouse is finished....for now

finally...after another rainy, grey week we finally got the sun and the blue sky back. obligatory sky pic for my sweet sis!

being that is has been so rainy and we can't finish the greenhouse properly, we are calling it done. have a look-see:

she's a real beauty eh? oh i love my greenhouse! the area in the centre with the osb on it is there because the window that filled that space broke! but jambaloney was able to finnagle another window in it's place. i'm pointing this out because his original plan had the whole front be all windows.

anyway - here's the back - woohoo!

as you can see, due to all of the rain we have been having jambaloney decided to finish off the back with plastic. it works like a charm! we will wait for the less rainy days and jambaloney will continue working on the greenhouse. but we have other jobs that are catching up to us around the homestead so this will work for us until we have the time to get back to it.

with all the rainy, grey days we have been having, i felt like some stick-to-your-ribs steak and kidney stew - yummeh!

and on a lighter note, a dinner of vermicelli, apple, cucumber, shrimp and chives with a hot, sweet, salty, tart chili lime dressing. so spicey!

here's one side of the greenhouse. i moved all of my tomatoes off of the porch in order to be able to get the peppers out of the house and onto the porch! these tomatoes will be put in the ground as soon as i am sure of 3 straight days of sun. no worries tho, they are thriving in the greeenhouse!

here's some more tomatoes.

and here's all the rest!

as you can see, i am slowly decorating the greenhouse with my little bits of stuff. once the tomatoes are in the ground, jambaloney is going to build me a whole pile of shelves on the front and back of the greenhouse. i plan on putting the peppers in the greenhouse and leaving them there all season. we have several windows that open, one on each side of the greenhouse as well as automatic venting window things. the peppers will love the heat and humidity out there.

it's been a lot of work but that greenhouse is going to pay off in spades for extending our growing season. oh and sitting out there in the winter, bathing naked in the sun, is not the least of it's uses. i love my greenhouse!

  1. I just had to come and sit down because my back is hurting, and I am so happy to see this post. That looks like a fine greenhouse. And, all the plants look happy.

Before I wanted a greenhouse, I desperately wanted an 8'x8' little glass house with screens on some windows, so that I could sit and take in the heat and breezes of summer without mosquitoes. I planned to transition into fall by opening or closing windows as needed.

Then, in the winter or the rain I could sit in there bundled up if necessary to read and enjoy the outdoors. There would be a chair, a table and a chandelier with candles.

I even planned a wide "bench" to run the length of the back wall, a bench that could be hinged and dropped down. The plan was to lie on the bench and sleep if I wanted to in the sun.

    No, no naked sun bathing.

It is good your massive greenhouse can serve double duty. And, you will have more vegetables!

    1. Linda - i got the table and chairs - even an extra bed to put out there for sleeping - but i am going to need a proper southern chandelier with candles!!! pleeez do send eh?

i am sorry that your back is hurting but i promise that if you were visiting i would be bringing you delicious food and proper southern tea (unsweetened of course) while you were lounging in the greenhouse (and wearing clothes. but i really recommend that you strip them all off!)

you know exactly how this greenhouse will help us during our 4 seasons. we will grow all kinds of delicious food for 3 seasons...and during the winters, we'll be napping and reading on sunny days. sans clothes. bahahahahah!

and ya - it really IS a big greenhouse. i keep threatening that i am going to move out there permanently. all i need built is a loft. oh and a southern chandelier!

  2. Great job you guys. Hard work pays off. As I drive around near our new place I see many farms with large gardens for their own needs.

    2. Just get a junky, non-working chandelier. Strip the electric and rig it where it will use led or candles. You can stick these glass things with a little nipple that sticks where the bulb goes. Then, a candle or led lights can go in there. If you want to lower and raise it so you don't have to climb, you could put a rope/chain to lower and raise and hook it to the side of the wall where it is handy to lower the central chandelier. I am sure jambaloney will be able to fix something wonderful. You can paint it before it goes up.

Even wall sconces with candles would be cool. Yep, chandelier is a must....sort of. If you were closer, you could have one of the three in my basement! I have so much good junk.

  8. oh kymber...your greenhouse is beautiful and you are going to love how warm that greenhouse is in the middle of winter. I had a table and chairs in mine until I needed the space. I also had little fairies and even wind chimes. I miss all of the growing. I only use mine now to overwinter my pineapple and a few house plants. I want to sell it but Papa Bear uses most of it for storing his junk.bahahaha If you begin to have a problem with your plants you may want to add a little circulating fan. It keeps your plants healthy and disease free.

We need to figure out a way to email food or you need to stop posting such creations...I'm starving!

    1. oh Mamma - i love my greenhouse. even tho it is owned by Sweet Sandy and i am never going to get Linda out of it - bahahahahah! Mamma - one thing i have learned in life is that if you have any spare space somewhere - a man will come along and fill that space with junk - bahahahahahha! jambaloney is now working on making four faucets to have four hoses that go all over our yard as well as digging a trench in order to provide electricity to our greenhouse...all with the advice, knowledge, and experience of our dear friend W!!! W knows everything about everything and his help has been thoroughly appreciated!

oh ya. we need to email food. allllll of us need to learn how to email food!

big hugs to you and Papa and that gorgeous Marine! xoxoxo

  14. Tanning salon or greenhouse? You be the judge!

It's ten kinds of awesome. One of my favorite pictures I saved once upon a time was a greenhouse made of old discarded windows and doors of shapes and sizes. Ands you all did one! Amazing, I don't know what else to say.

Oh, and it SO needs a chandelier. I agree 110%. With sparkly dangly bits that catch the sun and cast little rainbows all over the place!!

  21. I bought about half a dozen redwood 2x4's and ripped them in half on a table saw and used some plywood scraps I had laying around for the sides. I used 6 mil polyethylene plastic to cover it. best prices
