The Framboise Manor First Official Day of Seed Planting....and garlic too - woohoo!

there is nothing like the first day of planting seeds! it means that spring really is in the air, although we could still get belted with another snowstorm. but these seeds are planted indoors in jambaloney's crazy seed-starting thingamajig that i will show you later.

yesterday, the day was bright and beautiful and clear. we started the day with a hottub dip and then a walk around the yard.

all 3 cats came with us - here is Frankie Blue Eyes - not his best angle!

even little Noodie-Nue came out. he hasn't been out in days because he really does not like cold or snow!

here's Mobie-Moe sitting on the stone deck.

day-lillies are beginning to pop up out of the ground - that is always a good sign!

the pond is completely melted - another good sign. soon we'll be hearing "meep-meep-meep" from the spring peepers who lay their eggs in our pond. i can't wait to hear them.

here's jambaloney's seed-starting thingamajig. it's a standard greenhouse thingy with plastic wrap that you can buy anywhere for about $40. we've had ours for almost 10 yrs now. the special thing is that jambaloney built a stand that goes around it and on both sides, top to bottom, are 2 fluorescent lights.

we put it right in front of the kitchen door so that the seeds get natural light but also get the additional light from the bulbs. as well, we have found through years of practice that the seedlings don't get so leggy as they do when the light is directly above them. the seedlings tend to grow straighter and towards the window. this contraption is excellent on grey or cloudy days as the seedlings still get the light from the bulbs.

we planted 52 tomatoes and 28 peppers...more peppers coming plus we have 13 overwintered pepper plants here in the house. all of them are starting to flower and bush out and one plant even has a monet pepper fully-grown!

Frankie Blue Eyes always likes to help! as soon as we got everything set up, i put my gardening book and my Vesseys magazine on the counter and he was on it before i even blinked.

needless to say i had to take notes on a sheet of paper and then transfer the notes after Frankie finally moved (3 hrs later!).

we also planted 100 garlic bulbs - woohoo - but i didn't get a pic of that. i'll get one another day. we planted 100 garlic bulbs last fall and they are all coming up beautifully. we love our garlic!!!

the early evening sky was beautiful while we were sitting in the hottub talking about all of the things that we talk about.

supper was chicken teriyaki with veg and rice. the spinach side dish is a korean dish called sigeumchi-namul. it's basically spinach sauteed in sesame oil, then you add some soya, a ton of garlic and korean red pepper flakes. it's spicy and delicious! then some kimchi and oranges to finish out the meal.

of course i had mine blitzkreiged in the nutri-bullet. nerves of steel, i tell ya. but i want my nutrients and i want to be as healthy as can be for my first fitting.

anyway, jam is at work on-site today - that guy works so hard and he makes me very proud! he may have to go back tomorrow or the next day - we're not sure yet.

i made a curried chicken thigh casserole with spinach, corn, rice, chickpeas, broccoli, cauliflower and carrot with a ton of garlic, ginger, lemon, homemade curry spice, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardomom. for the base of the curry i used a pint of our homemade canned tomatoes, coconut milk and cashew milk. i was crying and sneezing the whole time! it's gonna be delicious!

next up - i need to make myself some dinner - i had my probiotic super greens cashew milk drink for breakfast and took a probiotic pill. they say that taking antibiotics completely throws your own healthy gut flora out of whack and i speak from experience. i haven't taken antibiotics in over 7 years and as we eat pretty healthy, my gut flora was doing just fine. but the antibiotics really did throw everything out of whack. so that's why i've been drinking my probiotic drink every morning, taking my pill and blitzkreiging all of my meals. my own body seems to be re-establishing my good gut flora and once i finish my green drink and pills i won't need to take them anymore.

i hope that you all are having a mighty fine day, too!

  2. Hey! I have one of those seed starting thingamajiggys, too. But my seedlings are way leggy - very little natural lights makes its way into my little house. You take such good care of the two of you, kymber. You are awesomesauce!

    1. Susan - we have a full-length glass door which is where we set up the thingamajig. it really helps the seedlings as they grow. i am sorry that you don't have a lot of natural light - but hey - leggy seedlings are better than no seedlings at all right? and thanks for that sweet compliment. totally made my day! xoxox

  3. Love the seed-starting thingamajig!. Yep, I agree about antibiotics (or almost any pharmacutical(sp?)) throwing your body out of whack. Glad you are getting all your nutrients even though it must be hard watching Jam eat it all whole. Has he tried any meals blitzkreiged?

    1. the seed-starting thingamajig is awesome! and DFW - you are dead right about antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals - they really mess with your body's own ability to take care of itself. when i had my teeth taken out they gave me more shots of novocaine and lidocaine than you can imagine! i came home thinking i was hum-dinger fine...went wild and crazy for a week thinking i was all healed and then crashed hard. i did some research and found out that if you don't take a lot of pharmaceuticals (even aspirin or tylenol - which i very rarely take) - then the novocaine and lidocaine can stay in your system for up to 2 weeks!!!! so i think i was still whacked on that stuff, plus taking antibiotics that first week. because i felt no pain that first week and then went down. hard. i'm doing much better now tho.

jam always eats some of my mush to make me feel better. i tell him he doesn't have to but he still does it. the only thing i make him do is to go into another room when he makes a tomatoe, onion and sprout sandwich - i can't stand seeing him bite into that delicious sandwich and blitzkreiging it just isn't worth the bother - bahahahahahah! xoxoxxo

  4. Have to admit it's nice to see your pictures without snow in them.
Last weekend I transplanted two green pepper and three tomato plants. I'm not worried about any snow haha :-)

  5. I don't think that qualifies as a pond really. More like a ditch or a low spot :)

Good to see your supervisors were keeping you guys in line. I bet nothing would have gotten done otherwise.

  6. Dinner looks super good. Korean cooking strikes me as one that can be very healthy indeed.

What is the sign up there that it is time to start planting? I am getting a feeling for it here: The beginning of March may be too early, the beginning of May is probably too late.

I love garlic. Even I can grow it.

    Much love, TB

    1. TB - Korean food is very healthy as it includes raw, cooked, steamed, fried, and fermented food in every meal - not an easy task. but soooo good for you!

for us, the sign is the ground turning to mud. once we are in "mud-time" we know that planting in the ground is about 3 weeks away but planting indoors should start around "mud-time". for every place the signs are different.

oh garlic. please...don't even get me started! xoxoxox

  8. Hey Kymber,

Wow' you guys sure are industrius. I dont have the time and energy or patience to grow anything' The only thing growin' at my house is the mold in the microwave.
Down here in South Texas we don't grow things. We just shoot our food, lob off the hooves and start eatin'. If you want something green. Leave it in refrigerator for six months. It will turn green.

  10. medicine is some times needed. But I can tell you, taking really strong antiobiotics for a long time, made my tongue furry. No joke, I swear you could have combed it with a garden rake.

Hope you are well and take care of your self.

    1. Sol - i knew that i needed the antibiotics and i took them religiously. but they completely screwed up my own gut flora and it has taken me this past month to get back to normal. i am feeling really good, gums are healing up great, rinse my mouth with salt water every time i eat - and today was a great day as i felt fully myself. thanks for caring. sending love. xoxoxox

  11. Sweet Kymber,

It's great news that you haven't had a migraine. Maybe it was your teeth? I'm happy to hear you no longer are have those terrible migraines. Bulldog Man and I know exactly what you've gone through with them.

I have one of those green house things, this season I refused to pull it out (actually didn't have time). I'm planting directly in the soil.

You sure have a handle on your tomatoes and peppers. Do you have a plan for putting them away later? Canning, dehydrating??

Yum.....there's that delicious food you make....Kymber, I'm craving chicken teriyaki with veg and rice....do you think you can ship some?? LOL!!!!

Sending hugs and love your way.

    1. Sweet Sandy - no migraines or headaches for this past month - THAT is unheard of for me. i know that you and BDMan understand...and have always sympathized. i pray that removing all of these teeth will make the migraines/headaches stop.

i can't put anything in the real ground until may-ish....it's because we can still get some freezing nights. but i started a bunch of stuff in the greenhouse in the house, and the greenhouse out in the yard. i have put garlic out, potatoes soon, then peas....then a bunch more stuff to start in the greenhouse.

Sweet Sandy - i would mail you that chicken teriyaki in a heartbeat...it just might be a little green by the time you got it - bahahahahah!

sending love to my Sweet Angel always! xoxoxo
